You know about Noah, but what about the animals? Thimblerig is a little groundhog with big problems. He's a loner con-artist who's losing his mojo; the wild dogs who run the forest harass him at every turn; he's started having vivid nightmares of apocalyptic floods; and worst of all - he believes he sees unicorns when everyone knows unicorns are only the stuff of legend. But what one animal calls problems, Thimblerig calls opportunity. His problems inspire him to come up with the ultimate con: convincing a group of gullible animals that a world-ending flood is coming, that the fabled unicorns have told him where the only safe place will be, and that only he can lead them to safety. And all for a reasonable price, of course. But when the flood really does come, Thimblerig has a choice to make: either he really does save the ones who have trusted him, or he loses everything. And he discovers that his problems have only just begun.

Thimblerig's Ark was conceived while Nate sat in Tommy Condon's Irish Pub in Charleston, South Carolina, listening to the band play a song about why the unicorn missed out on Noah's Ark. Thimblerig's Ark looks at how the animals all made it there in the first place, focusing on a con-artist groundhog named Thimblerig.

I would recommend this book to other kids like me who like animals and fantasy books like Narnia and the Guardians of Ga'hoole, Warriors and books like that.

I liked that how in the story Thimblerig changed and how the author wrote about the battle between good and bad. At first it seemed like there was no hope but that the strength of the animals' belief made things change. The characters had very distinct characteristics and I could believe them acting as they did. However, I did think the description could be improved some--with more detail about the scenery or about how the characters felt and things like that. But I still really liked it and would read more books by this author if they were available.

The reading level is right for kids 8 or 9 through middle school. I thought it was fine.

This was an enjoyable little read. Nate has done a good job for a first novel (self-published at that!) of creating a very interesting and creative world; very "Narnia-esk" in its symbolism and imagery. It is the story of Thimblerig, the con-artist groundhog, and his self-absorbed master con, turned run-for-your-life escape plan from an impending world flood.

To fully enjoy this book, you'll have to suspend your sense of reality for a bit. Don't want to give away any spoilers, but this is a fantasy novel. If you are expecting a retelling of Noah (based off the title), then you might be a little disappointed and miss the heart of this book. My first inclination was to think that this was the animal's side of the Noah story. However, this is more a book of redemption with a powerful story of a loner con-hog whose encounter with the king of unicorns changes his life and others forever.

Due to some intense imagery and scenes, I would recommend this book for children and adults 8-ish and up. Read it and enjoy the unfolding of Thimblerig's story!

From the start Thimblerig is a hedgehog to admire, first for his honest appraisal of himself as a con, but as his story progresses, as a skeptic learning to trust others. A multitude of characters are introduced along the way, none of which are human. Yet each animal represents various aspects of an approach to life and for some, to faith as well.
The story is filled with action from start to finish. If you have the time to read in one sitting you can expect to be moved along throughout the time it takes to complete the 220 pages.
I highly recommend this book. It provides a matrix for many ideas about the nature of relationships on our journey through life.

This book was easy enough to read and had some good imagery. It was a fun take on the story of the ark. Know going in that it's a thinly veiled allegory for Christianity.

My issue with it was the consistent incorrect use of 'then' and 'than.' I think the wrong one was used at every opportunity. Pretty unacceptable for a book to reach distribution with such errors.

(Review by my ten-year-old)

I liked this book because it's great how Thimblerig went from a dirty, low-down con to a good guy. There is lots of action. My favorite part was when Thimblerig pounded Kid Duffy. My little sisters were scared by the book, so I read most of it by myself. It is funny and exciting and I loved how Mullins went ga-ga over Tabitha. I'd recommend this book to animal lovers who like adventure stories with a touch of comedy.

I honestly started the book groaning after the prolouge - unicorns, really? But, like a good reader, I accepted the author created world and gave the story a fair shot. It really wasn't that predictable, much to my surprise (usually books I download for free are found wanting), and telling the story of the animals getting to the ark is a fresh perspective, and made for an enjoyable read.

I look forward to reading the sequel!

My two cents: get this book, it is worth buying. (Just please ignore comments saying it is like Narnia, they just mean animals talk and its from a Christian-like vantage point. Don't disservice both books with the comparison. This book stands nicely on its own)

I struggle a bit with this review, because I wanted to really love this book. The positive, first: on one level, I did find the premise enjoyable and wanted to see how it ended. However, on another level, I did struggle because I wanted more depth: 1) Starting out, I had a hard time trying to figure out the audience level because of certain film noir elements (main character waking up from an all night bender/the bar scene?) 2) I wanted to know more about the characters, so I could care more and understand why they are together, especially since some are so annoying and tolerated (for example: in LOTR - there is a fellowship on a journey and we know the need of each character) 3) The ending was so abrupt, I felt a bit jilted, to be honest, with so many unanswered questions (who is navigating the ark? where are the humans? where do the unicorns go?) and 4) If the story is in the vein of some pretty big shoes (C.S. Lewis/Tolkien) then the allegory is on-the-nose in a way that made me cringe a bit. Overview, a good first effort, but I found I wanted more depth if the novel is to truly resonate with me.

What a great quick read! I couldn't put it down. Think modern-day Chronicles of Narnia: Talking animals playing out a somewhat simple story that is filled with wonderful Biblical messages and imagery, especially about how to trust God in difficult times and how God uses broken people exactly where they are. When my kids get a bit older, I will definitely read it to them. Great work!
