Subtitled, “A Monument to the Book as Object” this is essentially an art object. It is a collection of individual ideas from a host of writers/artists covering everything from tables of contents and footnotes, to errata and bookplates. Never on to appreciate this kind of art myself (self-referential? ironic?), I guess I was more tolerant because of the great love I have for the book, not only for the text it contains, but as an object.

Some of the essays here are quite engaging. I was also particularly taken with the photo collection of book (covers?) by Mark Dion. I have an interest in cover design, but I found I was more sucked in by identifying books I had on my own shelf and styles with which I was familiar.

Admittedly, it took me a bit to get into this book. Initially, I found it confusing as I wasn’t sure what I was looking at and what I was supposed to get out of it. As I studied it longer, however, I found myself liking it more. I began to see what this collection of book lovers was driving at. It has its moments of great cleverness and parts of great beauty. For someone interesting in books, it is a pleasure.
