Gilbert Keith Chesterton (29 May 1874 – 14 June 1936) was an English writer. His prolific and diverse output included philosophy, ontology, poetry, play writing, journalism, public lecturing and debating, biography, Christian apologetics, fantasy and detective fiction.
Chesterton has been called the "prince of paradox".[1] Time magazine, in a review of a biography of Chesterton, observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories—first carefully turning them inside out."[2] For example, Chesterton wrote the following:
Thieves respect property. They merely wish the property to become their property that they may more perfectly respect it.[3]
Chesterton is well known for his reasoned apologetics and even some of those who disagree with him have recognized the universal appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both liberalism and conservatism, saying:
The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected.
Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify such a position with Catholicism more and more, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism from Anglicanism. George Bernard Shaw, Chesterton's "friendly enemy" according to Time, said of him, "He was a man of colossal genius".

If you don't know "The Thing," then you don't really get Chesterton.

Anyone who attempts to become a "Chestertonian," without understanding his intimate relationship with "The Thing," will be in a similar position to an equestrian "expert" who has never actually ridden a horse. One cannot truly know Chesterton, truly appreciate the man behind the prose, poetry, plays, and other writings apart from "The Thing." While it is difficult, if indeed at all possible, to select one particular work as Chesterton's best, or as the most foundational, I will classify "The Thing" as indispensable to a serious study of Chesterton.

Chesterton at his best!

Best book I've ever read on Catholicism. Chesterton always asserts little truths about the Church in his other books, shying away from any real, all-out defense, saying that he will take up a more focused approach in some other place. Well, this is that place. A must read for Catholics.

highly recommended to fans of "the Thing" gave a lot of creedence to the movie and as character names were the same as movie (Copper , MacReady) it was rather enjoyable and easy to picture in one's "minds eye" what was happening , although there were very subtle differences which made it a little different , but not to the point of annoyance.

Bad formatting makes reading impossible

Don't buy this book in its present form: its format is chaotic. Sometimes, a line consists of one or two words; sometimes it's a full line; sometimes in-between. There are no indents or lines spaces between paragraphs. Taken together, these two factors make the text unreadable. This is THE WORST formatting I have seen, even in free ebooks. True, 99 cents is a negligible amount; I'd gladly pay more for a well put -together version of the book, one I really want but cannot find so far in any other electronic form. Very disappointing. (I'm an avid reader and scholar with at least a decade's experience of electronic downloading and reading (on my laptop before getting my first Kindle 5 years ago.)
