Have you ever wondered why some video game characters wear trousers and others don't? Or pondered the connection between a character's toned, muscular derriere and their level of dexterity? What about the depth of a crack, the jiggle of a cheek? When it comes to video game character designs, one of the most overlooked aspects is the buttocks. Sure, we might appreciate a nice toned butt on a character or giggle at GIFs of f*rts from time to time, but how often do we stop to really think about the meaning of the butt? In Things I Learned from Mario's Butt, video game critic Laura Kate Dale brings backsides to the foreground, analysing dozens of posteriors and asking the important questions: Has Mario let himself go? Do Link's small buttocks hold him back? When he dies, is Pac-Man eaten by his own caboose? Wedged full of original artwork by Zack Flavin, and featuring interviews with game developers and guest butt reviews from gaming favourites such as Jim Sterling, Stuart Ashen, Brentalfloss and more, this book is a deep dive into why butts are downright integral to the games we play. So, crack it open and have a cheeky look inside at some of the most interesting bottoms the world of video games has to offer.

Good humor, some good discussion, and a lot of great guest contributors.

Kind of the perfect coffee table book that your guests will wait till you're out of the room to thumb through - then get caught up in reading and not even notice you're back once they start.

Great hilarious artwork, fascinating stories and contributions from guest writers including Mike Bithell, and loving commentary and curation by the incomparable Laura Dale.

Well worth picking up.

This compendium of video game posteriors is incredibly extensive. I found myself absorbed in a world of buttocks that went beyond humor. Yes, I laughed, but it also made me think about the way bodies are portrayed in video games. Characters can give off messages of body positivity. Rendering butts takes work on the part of the game creators. Etcetera. I was also delighted by the myriad guest contributors. Both Little Kuriboh and one member of Team Four Star. Jim Sterling. Justin McElroy. I squeed so many times, I went a bit hoarse. And annoyed my husband. This is a fun book. And oh yeah the illustrations are phenomenal.

In this book, Laura takes a lot of pride and time into actually describing and inferring from the backsides of tons of Video game characters. I particularly like the Tracer one, the sheer audacity of it all even garnishing a chuckle or two. Some might be a little put off by the quick and easy butt puns But, I think, they were well paced in the writing and silly enough for my tastes. I’m proudly getting a Hard Copy for my bookshelf.

It’s amazing how much a butt will tell you about a game character. Get this book and find out while having fun along the way.

Been meaning to read this since Laura first talked about her campaign on Unbound and shared the excerpt about Skull Kid, but didn't get around to it until now. It's not a bad read, not deathly serious but it doesn't set out to break new ground. It's a book about butts in video games, and it does what it sets out to do. That said, I'd personally recommend a physical book if you're going to read it. The Kindle edition is fine, but more than a little awkward to read because of the layout. I had to zoom in and out a lot.

Great quality book and some fun imagery. But in all honesty substance is a bit lacking. Not as fun a read as I had hoped.
