I bought this whole series. They are interesting books but not as good as I thought they could be. Lots of cliches, more than I expected. I feel like the books don't talk nearly enough about Lily herself, and focus too much on the lives of some of the people around her, often only very lightly addressing some of the many difficult issues that I know confront family members of Down Syndrome children. A warning may be in order as well, that I noticed on one or two occasions some language used about Down Syndrome children that some people may find offensive.
Having said that, though, I must also say that I really appreciated the fact that these books exist at all, and enjoy reading them for whatever information and insight they may offer, as well as for the plain fact that an author is including a Down child/woman in a literary series - in fact, making her a heroine of the books. I love that. Kudos to Sherry Boas for this series.

Editorial Reviews
Review
The Things Lily Knew is terrific. Sherry Boas captures our imagination, plants a sense of expectation and then draws it all together for a beautiful ending. It is marvelous the way Boas weaves in the action of God's mercy, moving characters who are not all too willing to be moved. The story is infused with little occurrences, which in the end, are not so little, depicting the way God so often works in our lives. The Lily books are works of great quality that will stand the test of time." -- The Most Reverend Thomas J. Olmsted, Bishop of Phoenix
About the Author
A former newspaper reporter, Sherry Boas made her novelist's debut in 2011 with a series of gritty characters whose lives are unpredictably transformed by a woman with Down syndrome. Beloved by readers and critics alike, Until Lily, Wherever Lily Goes and Life Entwined with Lily's were inspired by Boas' adopted daughter, who has Down syndrome. The books were billed as a trilogy, but Boas missed Lily and decided to re-enter Lily's world with The Things Lily Knew, which is, strange as it may seem, the fourth book in the trilogy. Boas is also author of Wing Tip and A Mother's Bouquet: Rosary Meditations for Moms.

This book has the capacity to change the way you think about happiness, life, and human suffering. It tells the continuation of Lily's loving impact on everyone around her. This story also explores the ethical question of the possibility of ending birth defects like down syndrome. I love every single book of Sherry's because when I finish, I am left with the persistent feeling of gratitude for all that life has to offer.

This is a great book. I also have read the other books in the series. This was probably one of the best.

Amazing book

Sherry Boas intended for her novels about the profound impact Lily, a female with Down syndrome, has on everyone around her to be a trilogy. However, the author, who has an adopted daughter with Down syndrome, missed writing about Lily so much, she penned three more novels linking the lovable leading lady with family and friends.
I am awed by how fluidly and convincingly Boas tells the story of a precious life well worth living while simultaneously addressing the many questions and concerns parents often have when faced with what is commonly referred to as “a poor pregnancy diagnosis.” The demands on patience, time, energy, and effort for parents of persons with disabilities are often heavy, but none of them outweigh the tremendous love that abounds.
The emphasis on the immeasurable value of each person is more important than ever these days when some studies have shown that approximately 90% of the time when women are given a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome, they abort the child.
The main character Annabel Greeley is a Rhodes Scholar geneticist. Her thoughts, feelings, and beliefs are woven into the story in such a way that honors her struggles with hotly-debated moral and ethical questions. The sensitive treatment of tough topics is thoughtful without being preachy, another one of the strengths in the trilogy.
Annabel is in the throes of discernment, but the story jumps about from place to place and person to person without there being much transition or development of the plot. I felt confused by how scattered and indecisive Annabel seems. Without the character development and backstory, we are given about the other leading ladies in the series, her relationship quandary seems hard to envision or believe.
Honestly, this was my least favorite book in the series. That being said, it’s still worth reading to get the full effect of the intricately-woven lives entwined with Lily’s.

Four and a half stars. If you click on Sherry Boas' name in the tags under this post you can read my reviews of the first three "Lily" books. Lily had Down's Syndrome and these books tell the story of her life and how her life affected her family. Now it is years after Lily's death and her niece, Annabel is a geneticist who has been offered the chance to work on a project that could eliminate birth defects--not by the common practice of aborting "defective" babies but by causing a woman's body to eliminate genetically defective eggs so that those babies would never be conceived. Annabel spends much of the book trying to decide if that is a good idea, and her family's memories of her great-aunt Lily play a part in her decision.
Annabel has two guys who want her and the book is also about the love life of this thirty-something woman. She feels intense attraction to a guy who has hurt her and is somewhat indifferent to a guy whose goal in life is to make her happy? Which will she choose, and why?
I like Boas' writing. While this is clearly an "issue" book it is also a good story that is beautifully written. The characters are Catholic and while that plays a part in the book, the reader isn't hit over the head with religious doctrine. It is a short book that I think is a worthwhile read. Grade B+.
I'd like to thank the author and Catholic World Publishing Group for providing a review copy of this book.
