This is the fourth book in The Bennet Sisters Mysteries series. I like the four I have read up to now, because they can be read as stand alone books, as well as in order. They are all strong books standing tall in plot and writing skills.
In this case, the action is mostly in Scotland. Action is a key word here, as there is plenty to go around! Lise McClendon doesn't hold back in sparing the Bennet family in this book. There are deaths, mystery, and crime galore. Not only that, emotions run high, low, and out of control, among the sisters and extended family.
The tone of the series hold steady through this tale as the author takes the reader for a ride with the Bennetts. Everyone holds true to their character in action, word, and thought. They are a diverse, yet loving group.
I wanted to join them in Scotland, hear the language, walk the land, taste the food, and experience sleeping in the old drafty manor. Sadly, I'm at my kitchen table. Happily, for me, the author has the skill to transport me in my mind to watch the action and resulting mayhem. There was a wealth of things to stimulate the senses in the scenes written in this book. From wine and food, to sights and sounds, this book came alive.
I liked this book for the story itself and the skill of McClendon in helping me experience it. It's clever, fun, sad, mysterious, and just plain good reading. I do not have any qualms recommending it!
Merle's short side trip to France introduces us to the possibilities for the next novel in the series (I hope!).
