The puzzle: using a set of 6 green and black tiles, make the three-letter abbreviation for the month, and using a different set of four tiles, make the day's number. Each character can be made by placing one tile on top of a second tile. They combine to produce standard 7-segment number (like on a digital clock) or a 13/14-segment letter (like on most microwaves). A tile might have a segment in black or green, or it might be cut out to allow whatever is on the tile below to show through. Sometimes this means the black from the tray will show through, if both tiles have cutouts in the same position.

The puzzles aren't super-hard, but they are hard enough that you feel satisfied when you solve one. The number of combinations is big but not unmanageable, and you can fairly quickly rule out some of the top tiles because they have segments in black that shouldn't appear in the solution.
The pieces feel nice, and it is clear when you have the answer. The puzzle comes with a booklet with all the solutions, in case you get stuck.
My only (minor) quibble is that the tray that holds the pieces is a little thin and slightly squishy. It works fine, but I would have preferred a harder plastic.

Overall, lots of fun. My 15-year-old son (who has quite a bit of puzzling experience himself) also gives it a thumbs-up.

Even if you aren't a hard-core puzzler, you'll probably enjoy it, and it is well-worth the price. I plan to buy a few to give as gifts.

Disclaimer: I know some of the people who work for ThinkFun, and I got a free copy of the puzzle to try out. However, I loved their stuff long before I knew anyone there, and have bought pretty much everything they have ever produced.

I actually have fun every day taking a few moments to solve the same puzzle I did the day before. What I like is it's not as simple as saying 'I've already made a '2' back on the 12th and it's now the 20th so I'll do the same thing' because it may not be! One of the pieces you used to make the original '2 is now used to make the '0' so you have to figure out another way to make it. That's what I like... yes, technically it's the same puzzle every 31 days (for the numbers... months of course are only twelve) but you forget how you solved it 30 days ago because you've done 30 different versions since.

Like I said, great little time-waster when you need a quick break from work.

I do agree with the others here though... they kinda skimped on the tray.

Speaking of... something that originally drove me nuts thinking some of the numbers were unsolvable... you use the tray itself for some of the answers. In other words, if you arrange the tiles such that both pieces have a hole, and thus show what's behind the tiles, that is considered a black line which can be used to form part of the numbers. I was solving them on my desk which had a lighter background, and thus didn't realize that, thinking the puzzle was unsolvable. Now I know better.

I was very excited to get this game in the mail because I knew it would not only look great on my desk, but challenge those who were frequently at my desk (i.e. middle school students) and it did not disappoint!

LOVES:
Neon green color! It draws enough attention to it that me and my students want to mess around with it and it can't be missed! If I had to guess, I bet this calendar will see a lot of student's birthdays on it (as opposed to the date)!
Tricky enough to keep me on my toes, but not too tricky that I give up.

BUMMERS:
I wish the black tray was a bit sturdier.
I also wish that perhaps it had a little pocket or place to slide in the instructions and solutions on the bottom so I don't lose them!

OVERALL
I love having it and can't wait to get a few for my other math/problem solving friends!

This is a really clever idea. It serves the purpose of a day-to-day calendar while giving you a little brain exercise every day. It's a quick little activity (especially since you're not sorting out the month every day) and it's fun. The tiles are fairly thick and sturdy, while the black stand is neither of those. I haven't brought it into work yet as I'm trying to figure out a strategy for not smashing the stand on the way in. But at the price point I wouldn't expect much more. I would love to see someone license this and recreate it of metal or wood, though... It's a fun diversion that deserves to 'mature' into something polished, in my opinion. But, hey, for five bucks this is a very clever, fun desk toy.

This is such a fun puzzle. Our son is addicted to it and has been updating it daily for the last 40 days. It is part of his morning routine. This isn't an amazingly complex puzzle, so it is a perfect addition to a busy morning routine prior to a 2nd grader's school day.

He loves it so much, even when he misses a morning at home, he comes back and makes sure to do the day(s) he has missed.

A pleasant little once-a-day puzzle. But, once you get the month figured out, there's only the daily date to solve. I figure that it won't take too long to be able to remember how to solve the daily date. It makes me look forward to a new month [to solve].
