Product Description
Del (Peter Dinklage) is alone in the world. After the human race is wiped out, he lives in his small, empty town, content in his solitude and the utopia he's methodically created for himself - until he is discovered by Grace (Elle Fanning), an interloper whose history and motives are obscure. Worse yet, she wants to stay.

So no zombies here to stoke our terror of others: only the semi-mummified remains of all who died. And the protagonist Del is relieved of all the prejudice, judgement, revulsion, pity, fear and hatred that people used to send his way because he is different, he is a radical other. Yes, he is a white male, but he is the kind of man who would have had no place in Hitler's master race. He is an other.
Grace is an other being as well, as we see deeply affirmed at the end of the film. So these musings on the pandemic of conformism that kills instantaneously as one sits on the toilet or at the breakfast table. The survivors have only their own authentic feelings and individuality to protect them.
I also agree that whoever chose these particular actors for their roles, did an excellent job! Elle Fanning had me laughing with her childlike irreverence and spontaneity. Peter Dinklage impressed me with his infinite patience, resourcefulness and adaptability. They seemed to complement each other in many ways. I found myself bonding with both.
Dinklage's character was getting used to being on his own and seemed to actually enjoy it. I got that sense when after Del's daily catch, he would peacefully eat supper with a bottle of wine next to his plate. I found myself identifying with this. He later shared with Grace that he had felt more lonely when there were living humans running around. I forgot what philosopher once said that "other is hell."
Then one day, out of the blue, Fanning's character shows up. At first I thought that the contrast in personalities would create nothing but chaos, discomfort, a clash. But Del remained patient and soft-spoken. He, again, adapted to the new situation that life presented him. He taught Grace how to do the work he deemed necessary and Grace added her feminine, emotional angle, teaching him how to express more compassion for the human depth, the soul that had gone when their bodies became empty shells.
I found myself getting upset when Grace's parents suddenly showed up to take her back home. Especially with her father's intrusiveness. But once again, Del adapted to the new development.
This movie was a meditative experience. You have to relax, let go, and allow yourself to be gently carried by the currents it creates. You have to let your mirror neurons put you there, in that gray environment with no other human activity left in the periphery. You have to allow the silence to be as potent as the gun fire and police sirens in action thrillers.
This movie was really well made. It definitely captured the eeriness of a world that is suddenly barren of life. It delivered what a good movie is meant to. It effectively pulled me out of this life and into another. It gifted me, for an hour and thirty-nine minutes, with a novel experience.
A Big Thank You to it's actors and creators!
I think the whole movie is worth the time, a good watch. I like Peter Dinklage and think he's a great actor. He certainly proved himself again, in my opinion. I liked Elle Fanning; I think her character was well played, believable.
This is not a fast-paced, action thriller; it is a "sit down and watch a good movie" movie; I am so glad I picked it...
