Really really crap. Cheap, plasticky, quiet. I used to have the original version of the annoy-a-tron and it was amazing. I've just about induced strokes in several people. I gave one to the guy that tore his office apart looking for the beep and was sitting down to take the housing off his computer when I intervened, and one eventually broke so I ordered these. I saw the negative reviews but still had stupid stupid hope and I couldn't find ANYTHING like this product anywhere. I have a pending prank that a couple of us are engaged in and this is my part, I HAVE to come through!

Well, I'm not sure this is going to do it and I feel like I've been pranked, or punked, by ThinkGeek.

Be Patient and realize the sound is subtle

So, a workmate and carpool companion of mine got the Annoy-a-Tron as a Christmas present this year. In one of our rides to work, he recently recounted a prank of his wife and son that was pretty funny. I liked it so much, I had to buy the silly thing and try myself.
First thing to know, this thing is very subtle and patients to pull off the prank is a must. I tried for several days with the family and could never get anyone to notice. I forgot about it for several weeks and only decided to try again the other night.
Typically, we run an air filter in our bedroom as white noise and so I left it off before setting the Annoy-a-Tron on the window sill in our bedroom. To assure Mary Ann didn’t fall asleep immediately, I made some small chat and fidgeted a little bit. Then it started ... a cat meowed by the window. Mary Ann asked if I heard a cat, I feigned ignorance said no. From that point, it was game on.
Every 2-5 minutes the cat would meow. I would get up from bed to get water or blow my nose, making sure to disrupt Mary Ann from getting to fall asleep. For about 45 minutes, the cat meowed.
Mary Ann checked for Gerry, our cat, who she found in Matthew’s bed. She checked our bedroom. She opened the window and scanned outside with a flashlight, calling for a kitty. She decided it was in the bedroom and searched again. I steadfastly claimed I heard nothing and told her maybe she was hearing things.
Finally, I broke and thought I’d tell her. “Maybe I’m pranking you”, I said. “How?”, she asked. I paused and replied, “I don’t know”. “Thought so”, she said. After a moment, she thought about it and asked, “Alexa, make a meow noise”, “I’m sorry, I don’t understand the question”. So, off the hook, I excused myself to get more water and deftly scooped up the Annoy-a-Tron before heading downstairs. The remainder of the evening was meow free.
As I was showering the next morning, Mary Ann, went hunting in our garage for a cat. As I sat with her in the kitchen, she mused at where the cat could be - air ducts, the attic, outside the window. It also bothered her that it meowed infrequently. She thought maybe Gerry had brought a kitten home with him. I continued to repeat I didn’t hear a cat, questioned her sanity, and made sure to tell her I loved her A LOT. She even sat down at her computer and searched for what it means to hear a meowing cat that wasn’t there - is it a premonition of sorts or a form of mental breakdown?
Later in the morning she had called me from her work. She had forgotten her purse and phone at home and asked that I bring them to her. She had just made Chyann’s skating outfit and wanted to show the photos of Chyann in it to her workmates. I took the above photo of the Annoy-a-Tron with her phone and took it too her, giving her a hint of what I was up to.
That evening, no mention of the photo. I had placed the Annoy-a-Tron on the other side of our bed, speaker down, and the meow was much more subtle. As we settled for bed, Mary Ann had mentioned the cat again and once again, the cat meowed. As happen-chance, Gerry was in the hall and meowed as well. Relieved, Mary Ann got up and put him in Matthew’s room for the evening.
As we laid down to sleep, again a very subtle meow. I, of course, didn’t hear it. Concern that the cat was getting quieter, Mary Ann mused that it may be weakened. She expressed concern that maybe the cat was in the chimney. I “assured” her that if it was, she probably seriously injured it or cooked it that morning when she started the fireplace.
I laughed next to her and said she had me listening for a cat. Now Mary Ann and I have had colds and her nose was whistling at times. I had made comment I thought I heard a cat (when her nose whistled) and for a moment, she thought maybe that was what she was hearing.
I wasn’t satisfied with how loud it was, so getting up to get water, I grabbed a cup on the nightstand and reached over to turn it over. In the process of flipping it, loud meow! I thought, “busted!”. Mary Ann exclaimed, “Did you hear that?!”. “Hear what?”. “OMG!! IT WAS RIGHT THERE!”. “I’m sorry, honey, I’m pretty stuffed up and I’m not hearing so well”.
As I returned from downstairs with water, Mary Ann was scanning the room and looking out the windows, sure the cat was on the roof or in the attic. Now, throughout I continued to let her know I loved her, not knowing how this was going to go when I fessed up. She was now sitting up in bed, listening intently for a cat. I expressed I would sit with her and listen, but like any supportive husband, I bailed after a few minutes and laid back down just before the next meow, which, of course, I didn’t hear.
She began to muse about toys the children had that used to go off all the time and thought maybe ... meow again ... I didn’t hear it which elicits another “OMG!!”, but now I’m giggling ... some time passes, then meow ... she is now getting a bit more distressed and my giggling isn’t helping. I know it has to come to an end (and it is so hard to end it). I tell her I love her, confess, and show her the Annoy-a-Tron. “Hey, there’s a picture of that on my phone”.
We both have about 10 minutes of laughter, and, thankfully, she has a great sense of humor. Best prank ever!

Really disappointed - new annoyatron doesn't work as well

Really disappointing purchase. I bought the annoyatron a few years ago for an office prank and it looked and worked completely differently. I would agree with other reviews on here that mention the poor quality in comparison. First of all, there are no instructions included in the packaging. Secondly, after looking up the Q&A and figuring it out, the annoyatron I received doesn't seem to work. I keep pressing the button and it just beeps instead of going through the different sound settings. I'm very disappointed in this new iteration of the product. What's that saying? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Bought these to mess with my brother. I heard about them from a friend who had some great stories.

I was a bit disappointed with these compared to his. The first version was just an open circuit board and works very well for a long time. These seem to be lower volume and have either terrible batteries or consume much more power compared to the originals.

I put one in my brothers car and he never heard it and the battery died sometime in the two weeks it was running. They have an infant so I figured they would hear it while napping in the car when they got home.

The other issue I ran into is the button is on the magnet side. When it attaches it can press the button and change the noise.

I removed a star for battery and another for lower volume. Just one of these would be ok but both means it is a less useful gag.

Barely audible!! I could barely hear these so I decided to try and replace the batteries thinking maybe this would help. To my surprise, ALL THREE of the devices, the screws were essentially MELTED IN to the plastic housing making it ALL BUT IMPOSSIBLE to remove the screws and replace the battery. I figured for $15, what can you expect so I drilled the screws out but SAME NEARLY INAUDIBLE SOUND.

GREAT IDEA but POORLY IMPLEMENTED!!! Don't waste your money!!

Out of the 3 received, only 1 works as advertised. The other 2 will not randomly play the selected sound. They cycle through the sounds to select it just fine but that’s the only time you will hear it. It won’t play the sound again, no matter how long you wait.
They are also pretty quiet. The original Annoy-a-tron was smaller, louder, and had better (more annoying) sounds

You might think it's funny if you haven't had the first gen and second gen version but things usually get better and not crappier. Honest giving this a one star is even hard for me. My pet mouse can't even hear these things. If you have to hide this on anything other then someone's hearing aid or headphones they can't hear them. Why thinkgeek, why would you ruin something so beautiful?
