SUMMARY: If you have used (and love) the Lenovo Thinkpad keyboard, this is a great reproduction that you can use as a USB keyboard. I definitely recommend!

I've grown quite accustomed to Lenovo's STELLAR thinkpad keyboards because my work laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad T420. I was quite ecstatic to find out that Lenovo makes these USB ThinkPad keyboards...Still, I didn't want to buy something that would be a poor imitation of the real thing...and so I read reviews.

If you read some reviews, you will find talk of bugginess...there are reviews that speak of missed keys or of multiple letters being capitalized if you type too quickly (the "INitial CAps" problem). I wanted to know if these problems had been solved, so I googled some more...and I kept finding years old (2009, 2010) forum posts talking about the issue...and all of the posts seemed to conclude the same thing: there was a problem, and there were no concrete solutions.

But why were all of the forum posts so old?

When I checked the Amazon reviews, I tried to do something different...I sorted the reviews in order of NEWEST FIRST. From there, I discovered reviews from 2012 pointing out that people who had most recently bought this keyboard weren't experiencing the issue anymore.

I would like to join this crowd and PRAISE this keyboard. If you don't believe me, just sort by "Newest First" and hear the other folks praising too.

I type at over 100 wpm, and I have never experienced any problems with this keyboard missing strokes or capitalizing multiple times. So, let me just break this down for you:

PROS:
+ This keyboard will be familiar to anyone who has used (and loves) a Lenovo ThinkPad. That is the value proposition here.
+ Lenovo has fixed the major issues that were present in some of the 2008 and 2009 reviews, so this is completely usable.
+ The classic thinkpad keyboard "palm rest" is well appreciated here.
+ This keyboard does have a trackpoint, so if you are proficient with those little red buttons, then you can use that here.

That being said, there are still some cons

CONS:
- The keyboard appears to default to having the num-lock key on every time you reboot, so you have to manually turn that off when you start up. I haven't figured out how to change this; it appears to be a BIOS setting, but I haven't investigated that.
- Compared to a Lenovo Thinkpad keyboard that is actually a part of a laptop, this keyboard is VERY light. If you're trying to balance it on your legs like I usually do, you may find it to wobble too much. However, on a concrete surface like a desk, there is no problem.
- If you haven't used a ThinkPad keyboard before, there are some things to get used to here. The leftmost key is the Fn key, NOT the ctrl key (as it is on most non-Lenovo Keyboards), so if your ctrl commands don't seem to be working, make sure that you're actually pressing the ctrl button.

In the end, I think that there is one thing that could be added to this to make this my DREAM KEYBOARD - a track*pad*. It is true that this keyboard has a trackpoint, I often find myself reaching for a trackpad that isn't here...since on my laptop, I do frequently use the trackpad buttons and scrolling gestures.

Works with Macs.

A very quiet keyboard, with no click. The keypress has a definite but moderate break point, and a bounce that is mildly springy. It's quasi-therapeutic feeling, and my fingers never get tired.

Works well with a Mac if you change a couple of settings in System Preferences. Go into System Preferences/Keyboard/Modifier Keys, select the Thinkpad USB Keyboard from the drop down menu, and switch the Option key to be the Command key, and the Command key to be the Option key. Thereafter, the modifier keys adjacent to the spacebar will be the Command keys, the next one out (the Windows key) will be Option/Alt, and the furthest out will be Control. EXCEPTION: The middle modifier key on the right side, the Windows menu key, works unpredictably, having either no function or typing an odd character, depending on the app, so you'll have to settle for having an Option key only on the left.

I also check "Use F1, F2...as standard function keys."

Next, go to System Preferences/Mouse and slide the Tracking speed and Scrolling speed all the way to the right. The Trackpoint button is very accurate but has a unique acceleration curve. I got used to it; some users might not.

Here are some default key functions you'll want to learn (a couple are different in MS Word, which I'll note further down). These assume you have swapped the Option and Command keys as described above:

Reveal desktop - F11
Reduce brightness (on Mac laptops) - ScrLk
Increase brightness - Pause
Scroll one screen up/down in any app - PgUp/PgDn
Jump to the top/bottom of the current doc/webpage - Home/End
Delete word forward - Option+Delete
Delete word backward - Option+Backspace
Beginning/end of line - the keys just above the Left and Right arrows.
Show Spaces (virtual OSX desktops) - Control+Up arrow
Show all windows of current app - Control+Down arrow
Move one Space right or left - Control+Right or Left arrow. (Equivalent to swipe right/left with 4 fingers on a trackpad.)

In Microsoft Word:

Word Help: Insert
Move to beginning/end of line: Home/End or the keys just above the Left & Right arrows
Move to top/bottom of doc: Cmd+Home/End
Move to next paragraph: Opt+Up/Down arrow
Move to next section break: Opt+PgUp/PgDn
Delete word forward: Cmd+Del
Delete word back: Cmd+Backspace
Delete to end of word: Cmd+Delete
Delete to start of word: Cmd+Backspace
Close current doc: Cmd+F4
Select text: Mostly works as with Mac keyboard, but Shift+Opt+Right arrow won't select the next word (although Opt+Right arrow will move to the next word, and Shift+Opt+Left _will_ select the word to the left). To get around this, use Word's F8 "Extend selection" function. Wherever your cursor is, if you press F8, you can start moving your cursor with standard navigation keys and all text will be highlighted. You can also press F8 twice to select the nearest word, press it again to select the current sentence, and again to select the current paragraph. It's worth experimenting with it.

Works perfectly fine for this 100wpm typist!

I've been using this keyboard for nearly a year with Windows 7. I type over 100 wpm, and I can attest that it works perfectly fine. I was afraid to buy it after reading some of the other reviews that called it "unusable" but none of those warnings came true for me.

I've owned a similar model of keyboard (used to be called the IBM USB Ultranav Keyboard) since 2004. Compared to the old version of this keyboard, my only complaint is that the current model does not have a USB hub built into it. This was helpful mainly if you also use an external mouse (sometimes it's easier to use a mouse in Excel than the built-in trackpoint). It was nice to have only one wire going from your keyboard tray to your computer rather than two.

Other than that, this keyboard is great. And as another review mentioned, it costs only half as much as what IBM used to charge for the similar model a few years ago. However, the IBM version did come with a faux leather carrying case - this one doesn't. Most people, I suspect, don't travel with external keyboards and probably won't miss it.

Build quality isn't excellent (it's made of moderately cheap plastic and yes it will bend if you try), but it's good enough that it will last years. The last model I owned was made by IBM and build quality was similar - Made in China, but has lasted almost 10 years so I see no reason why this one won't do the same.

One very thoughtful feature that Lenovo included is drainage holes on the bottom of the keyboard in case you spill liquid on it. I have never had to test this feature but it is nice to have if you're spill-prone!

I love Thinkpad keyboards and I love the Trackpoint. I will always buy this model of keyboard as long as I use a computer!
