It was ordered with 16 GB of ram, but actually arrived in intact packaging with only 4GB ram.
There was a single 4GB memory stick installedl. See photo.
This single 4GB memory stick was installed in the first blue slot from the bottom. All other slots are empty.
After reading mostly great reviews I was very surprised to receive this misconfigured server.
I don't want to return this server, just want the memory I ordered and need.
The first TS140 was a 9TB i7 upgrade model, which is still in use today with absolutely no issues at all. I have several services running on the machine, using Proxmox as a virtualization platform to run individual linux guests running PLEX and a variety of other home media and service tasks. Six virtual machines, 8 PLEX instances transcoding video, two video recording sessions and a couple of web services and it still churns along with no issues what so ever. It doesn't even get warm. If you want a real RAID though, this may not be the box for you. RAID-100 or whatever they are passing off to be a redundant disk system just isn't. Build a nice NAS and stick it out in the garage.
The second TS140 was an i3 model to replace my aging home web/DNS/everything web related servers and mail servers. The web boxes were 2 older dual Xeon 1U Rackable systems running Blueonyx. The mail servers were 2 Dell 1950 dual Xeon 1U systems running Debian/Zimbra services. I installed Debian Jessie on this machine along with VirtualBox. I also added a 4 port NIC , 4TB drive and RAM. The four old servers were mirrored using Clonezilla and setup in Virtualbox without issues. I left and built this one around a standard Gnome desktop just to see how it would perform and wanted to play with Virtualbox anyway - but will likely push Proxmox into this machine soon to squeeze any additional cycles.
The TS140 series have to be the most quiet server I have ever experienced, even with 3 7.2k SATA drives running in the stock configuration you can't hear the thing running unless you are right up next to the server.Read more ›
Ordered with 16GB of ram and 1TB HDD. Order an additional 1TB WD Blue HDD http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0088PUEPK?redirect=true&ref_=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_3 . The machine comes with a plastic cradle that holds the hard drive(see attached pic), which makes installing the second drive about a 1-minute job. The machine has a couple of extra SATA hookups running from the power supply.
Excellent server for a small business on a budget
Plenty of processing power
This is a "bare bones" server. No OS, keyboard or mouse. Which is probably the only way to find a quality server on a budget. You don't have to be a computer wiz to load an OS onto this machine, but you can't be computer illiterate either. Just look up on Youtube "How to clean install (your OS)".
There is not much I could add after a few hours of use to what has not already been written.
Do not buy this product unless you have a definitive purpose for it. It is not going to work for you out of the box. That said, this review is to credit Computer Upgrade King just as much as Lenovo. The system arrived with the exact configuration, and Debian 64amd netinstall runs on it flawlessly. The VGA connection has issues in text-mode, but Debian xcfe boots into my VGA max 1920x1080 in less than 30 minutes after inserting the CD and starting installation.
If there is a satisfying $1 happy-meal in server hardware, and 3rd-party upgrade service, this must be it.
It would be unfair to Lenovo to list here the upgrade-hardware part numbers Computer Upgrade King used in my system. If this was a desktop I would have no problem making it all public.
It would be very premature to describe a server system upgraded with non-supported hardware [by the manufacturer] as a success.
Again, you are going to need a predetermined, better-yet a definitive purpose for this box. If that is Linux - Debian supports CPU, RAM by Computer Upgrade King, SATA, integrated GPU, integrated NIC - right off default-install by slim kernel. I do not need sound or any video other than VGA so no comment.
The box I bought is a Debian backport-VirtualBox host for Windows servers evaluation releases, awaiting endless install-upgrade-test torture for applications such as .NET and MS SQL.Read more ›
