Calificado en Estados Unidos el 26 de agosto de 2017Amazing creatures with personality in their eyes. The photos are breathtaking. This book has brought me to a point where I want to visit the rescue center in Sumatera. These primates are so much like us but much more loving and caring.

Nicola ACalificado en Reino Unido el 5 de febrero de 20105.0 de 5 estrellas Best book on Orangutans!
This is a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about Orangutans, it is packed full of information on all different subjects about orangutans and includes lovely colourful photographs on nearly every page. It also includes lots of information on The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS) - who were in Orangutan Diary, as well as some of the book written by the founder of BOS. I had previously read the WWF book Orangutans: Behaviour, Ecology and Conservation which I enjoyed but I much prefered this book and the way it was written. It includes fasinating chapers on Orangutan behaviour and how similar they are to humans - 97% the same! There are also stories about the lives of specific orangutans and some of the amazing things that they have done as well as stories about some of the orangutans rescued by BOS including photographs of an orangutans swimming which has never before been photographed and never before been seen in the wild. If you enjoyed the Orangutan Diaries series then this book is a must!

Amazon CustomerCalificado en Reino Unido el 4 de enero de 20195.0 de 5 estrellas Tells the full story of the plight of orangutans, but also offers a glimmer of hope for the future
I love, love, love this book! Superb quality (very heavy) and got it at a great price from Amazon. Couldn't put it down when I started reading it and looking at the gorgeous photos. I smiled, laughed and cried in equal measure as I worked my way through it. If you're interested in the plight of orangutans and the Borneo rainforest in general, this is a must read. Would love to follow this up by volunteering at an orangutan rescue centre... this book has literally inspired me :)

J. TaylorCalificado en Reino Unido el 30 de junio de 20124.0 de 5 estrellas Passionate Plea over Plight of the Thoughtful Ape
The title might suggest this is a book regarding the intellectual abilities of the orangutan. Whilst cerebral abilities are addressed early on, this is not the focus of the book: This is a report by conservationists of primary information regarding the wholesale destruction of a massive habitat and the sickening consequences for highly sentient beings.
Schuster initially makes a strong case for the orangutan as the deep and considered thinker of the great apes. The narrative is often anecdotal, but the information contained is clear, first hand and unique. The text is easy to read - every detail is interesting and at least three quarters of the large (317) pages are lavish colour photos.
The main thrust of this book exposes appalling destruction and cruelty in Indonesia, and the dauntless efforts of those with a moral sense to mitigate this. Some of the more graphic material has been edited out, yet the stark realities are thoroughly communicated. This would make depressing reading were it not balanced with the reports of resolute courage in the face of adversity: The innocence of our orange cousins is also accompanied by wonderfully strong altruistic character, accepting people despite outrageous mistreatment.
Schuster concludes with a more uplifting chapter on what can be achieved to save the rapidly declining populations (about 5,000 per year), in the form of a sanctuary. One won't be enough - there are at least 2 species and several sub species, but this is a vital step.
I take no pleasure out of criticising this valuable book, but I will: The only serious fault is a lack of academic/scientific rigour, as many contentious issues are explored. The are no references! Granted - most of the information is first hand and sad to say very believable. Schuster describes his training as that of a rainforest ecologist (p265). When writing the chapter relating orangutan species & subspecies, I would have expected Schuster to mention if cross-breeding has occurred, how recently, and if so are the offspring fertile.
In summary, this book is a wonderful resource, very reasonably priced and I would far rather own this than many books which tick every box. I felt frequently challenged - this is a real eye opener. Buy this, read it, then use it as a coffee table book if you dare!

Ms. Maureen RidleyCalificado en Reino Unido el 17 de febrero de 20115.0 de 5 estrellas The best
By far the best book I have ever read about the orangutan. Sumptuously illustrated, it covers every aspect of the threats to the orangutan: the illegal pet trade, deforestation and consequent habitat destruction and even murder. It also illuminates orangutan behaviour: their deep intelligence, empathy and gentleness. Always a mysterious, solitary animal, this book reveals much of their nature and the valiant efforts by orangutan rescue and rehabilitation centres to save them from extinction. Once you read this book, you will understand why their human 'saviours' go to such extraordinary lengths to reach out to help.
