Editorial Reviews

Based on the best-seller, Stephen King's Thinner serves up the tale of a 300-pound attorney with an inflated ego to match, a 109 year old gypsy with a supernatural ax to grind, and a dose of deadly revenge that compels its victim to eat now and pay later.

Billy Halleck (Robert Burke) is the biggest lawyer in town, both by reputation and size. Weighing in at 297 pounds he is already on a diet mandated and monitored by his wife who wants him to lose weight. Billy just won a big lawsuit for his client Richie Ginelli, called Mr. Mafia by Billy's daughter, who is an underworld crime boss. He celebrates the victory with dinner with his wife and while traveling home he is distracted and kills a 75 year old gypsy woman who is in town with a local carnival. Being the biggest lawyer in town and friends with the sheriff and the judge he barely gets into trouble even though he is clearly at fault and lies about what really happened. Knowing the system he manipulates the truth and he doesn't accept the responsibility for his careless driving and actions. He doesn't even get points on his driver's license.

After the court hearing the 109 year old gypsy grandfather of the victim touches Billy's face and says one word, "Thinner." Billy begins to quickly lose weight and no matter what he does he is facing death. Everyone involved in the case and the release of Billy including the judge and the sheriff are dying of strange diseases. The common cause seems to be the old gypsy grandfather who touched all those men and said one word to each one.

Billy begs forgiveness from the grandfather who tells him that if he doesn't leave the gypsy camp that his curse will get worse. Billy curses the gypsies as the White Man From Town because that is what the gypsies call him. Vengeance turns out to be a pie served cold!

This was a good movie if you are a Stephen King fan. I own the DVD and the book and I actually like the book better as it goes into much more detail as books often can do.

Thinner has always been one of my favorite King movies for some reason and if your reading this review you probably have already seen it and are interested in what they did with the blu ray. I was amazed at the quality of the transfer of this Blu Ray. The audio and picture are amazing, but I was seriously disappointed that it is a Bare bones release with no special features what so ever.

This movie is based on another one of Stephen Kings books and is sure to catch your attention. Based on fictional characters as well as plot Thinner will keep you guessing whats next and how far will one man go to be cured. With a typical Steven King twist at the end your sure to be captivated from beginning until the end.

I had seen this years ago and remember thinking the acting stunk. I thought I'd watch it again this weekend and the same impression was made. The lead actor is really horrible. The fat makeup or costume or whatever is obvious and he looks weird in the first half of the movie, unrealistic. When he loses weight he looks a bit more realistic but he is so stiff and unnatural acting that it kills it. But the story is entertaining, sometimes outright hilarious and the twist ending is great. Leave it to Stephen King. I just wish they'd translate his stuff to the screen with better writing and acting. A lot of movies made from his books are downright bad. But it is entertaining on a boring afternoon so I recommend it and it's safe for the whole family.

For the most part I love films based on Stephen King's books. This is a super story! It chronicles the journey a man must take in hopes to free himself of a Gypsy curse after a tragic accident claimed the life of an elderly Romani woman. The man, a popular attorney, was negligent and "distracted" or he would not have had the accident. When the police, judge and officials conspire to free the attorney of any criminal charges the olde Gypsy man takes matters into his own hands laying a curse at their feet. Our main character's variety of the curse is to become "Thinner" and eventually wasting away. But perhaps his price to be free of the curse might be to high costing him more than he'd stand to lose.

Billy Halleck is a wealthy small town lawyer that is struggling with his growing weight problem. As the film opens Halleck wins his latest trial, defending a Mafia boss named Ginelli who's been accused of putting a hit out on a witness. In celebration of his latest victory, Halleck and his wife go out to dinner with the trial judge and his wife. One his way home from the dinner, Billy gets distracted while driving and mistakenly runs down an old gypsy woman who is crossing the road. Because of Billy's position in the community and his connections, the inquest is rushed and goes in his favor, so Billy will not be punished for killing the old woman. Billy isn't so quick to escape Gypsy justice though as he's cursed by the leader of the Gypsy group.

This is actually a somewhat faithful adaptation of the Bachman (King) novel, and the make-up F/X are top notch. But with that said, this isn't a very good movie. I think I lay most of it at Robert John Burke's feet for his portrayal of Billy Halleck. Burke seems to be auditioning for "Batman" here as everything he says comes out as a harsh whisper. I'm not sure if he's trying to come across like a Jack Nicholson/Jack Palance type of delivery, but it gets really grating. The supporting players are all pretty solid; Joe Mantegna, Kari Wührer & Michael Constantine, all turn in entertaining performances, but Burke drags it all down around him.

If you are a big fan of King and the film adaptations of his novels, then give this one a view. If you are looking for something scary, pick up something else.
