Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Third Coast Percussion has been saluted by the Washington Post for it's "virtuosity and precisely timed wit", and was called by the New York Times a "commandingly elegant" ensemble. The group, which is ensemble-in-residence at the University of Notre Dame, teaches and performs a concert series in Chicago, and has commissioned dozens of new works. This album is the ensemble's Cedille label debut, and is an 80th birthday acknowledgement to American composer Steve Reich, the founding father of musical minimalism. This recording features four of Reich's most notable percussion works.
Review
*** GRAMMY WINNER, 59TH AWARDS: Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance ***
"It's above all a sensual approach to tone color that comes through in Third Coast's take on classic works, whether it's the relaxed warmth of the Mallet Quartet or the glistening brightness of "Music for Pieces of Wood." Joined by the pianists David Friend and Oliver Hagen, the ensemble also finds full-blooded drama in the Sextet, which contains within its five movements a world of expressions from impish charm to almost oppressive darkness." --Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim, New York Times

Comparisons of the versions of the Sextet [1985] reveal that the group Third Coast Percussion take things marginally slower, 2 minutes 11 seconds to be precise, than Reich's own recording which was made in 1986. My own observation after hearing both is that the newer version is steadier than the other but I reckon you would probably not notice the difference.
This disc is a little belter and I would highly recommend it to anyone. But to anyone with an interest in building a cd collection of Steve Reich's music it's probably an essential. Hmm, I wonder what Third Coast Percussion would do with Drumming? It's over to you Cedille.
