Michael Burleigh's The Third Reich presents a major study of one of the twentieth century's darkest periods.
Until now there has been no up-to-date, one-volume, international history of Nazi Germany, despite its being among the most studied phenomena of our time. The Third Reich restores a broad perspective and intellectual unity to issues that have become academic subspecialties and offers a brilliant new interpretation of Hitler's evil rule.
Filled with human and moral considerations that are missing from theoretical accounts, Michael Burleigh's book gives full weight to the experience of ordinary people who were swept up in, or repelled by, Hitler's movement and emphasizes how international themes for Nazi Germany appealed to many European nations. It also focuses on the Nazi's wartime conduct to dominate the Continental economy and involve gigantic population transfers and exterminations, recruitment of foreign labor, and multinational armies.

Another fine aspect of this work is that while it does not flinch at looking hard at the ugliest chapter in European history, he does not stare mawkishly at the bizarre figures of Hitler, Goering, Goebbels and the like. Indeed the reader is expected more or less to know the members of the cast. I agree with the other reviewers that this book is now a standard entry in World War II histories and among studies of modern European history as well.
Unfortunately, as other reviewers have correctly pointed out, the book does not read well. Geared to impress an academic audience, Burleigh's writing style is arcane. The book cries out for a good edit. My wife, a college professor herself, said she would grade the book "A" for content, and "F" for writing style and said that it is very typical of PhD types who are trying to impress. Spare us Dr. Burleigh, you do not need to work so hard to impress, your scholarship and your research speak loudly enough. Write for the wider audience that needs to read and understand this important book.
For the reader willing to sit with a good, comprehensive dictionary in hand, wading through this book is worth the effort because the insight gleaned does prove valuable. For those not so inclined, this latest effort at a solid, single volume history of the Third Reich falls short. We are still waiting for that book to be written.

I kept randomly reading different chapters to hope it would improve. Sadly it did not.
While I accept that there is some new research in here – I know this subject very well I’m still learnt things I didn’t know – I just could not get over the tabloid style.
Since when did a proper historian use the word “berserk“. I see another reviewer said that what they like about the book was The author made his dislike of the subject very clear.
That is exactly what I did not like.
I do not want to know a historians and emotional response to this subject.
I want to know their analysis based on the facts and their objective judgement.
If I want to read subjective emotions I would read Katie Price!
If you are a serious student of this period, do not waste your time.
The only genuinely great history of this period is the Richard Evans three volumes. Also William sharers book in 46 is a good starting point.
A book covering some of the same ground as "The Third Reich" is Mark Mazower's excellent "Hitler's Empire". Mazower's book is less wide ranging, less detailed in the account of the Nazi's rise through the 1930's, the period when Hitler formulated the vague notions of world dominance which the rest of his revolting gang put into practice.
This book describes in great detail the social and political aims and policies of the National Socialist regime, from Hitler's beginnings as a beer-hall ranter to a man who infected the people of Goethe, Bach and Beethoven with the politics of hate and violence and succeeded in persuading them to act out his appalling vision. The general perception of the Nazis is that the evil of their regime is known, principally as the brutal military invaders of Russia and Western Europe. But the full extent of the evil, evil that penetrated right down into the foundations of German society itself, is not revealed unless by books such as this. Be prepared to think to yourself, as I did, "I knew it was evil. I had no idea it was so profoundly evil."
He demonstrates great scholarship, but some of the page long sentences required a couple of readings and a penchant for using obscure words and creating new variants did send me scurrying for the dictionary!
Overall though I would rate the book highly and have shared it with my children so they can see this period as it was rather than through the "Hollywood" lens.
