a. Before 1973 abortion was in back alleys, always illegal, and rare
b. Before 1973 the Church was uninvolved in abortion
In fact, many people believe that the very concept of “pro-life” was INVENTED by the Republican party in the 1980’s in order to mobilize Christians as a voting bloc for them. I hear this view promoted constantly on NPR.
But the author, George Gant, provides detailed, fascinating evidence that:
a. There is an unbroken, documented history covering all continents for over 2000 years that abortion has been practiced. It just isn’t that hard. People everywhere since antiquity figured out that if you introduce a foreign liquid into the womb, the baby will die. Gant cites historical documents about this.
b. There is an unbroken, documented history over the last 2000 years of the Church speaking out against abortion. Just about every famous name you can think of from every century in Christendom addressed the issue. Gant cites these historical documents as well.
Why the title Third Time Around? Gant argues that
1. At the height of the Roman empire, the world was pagan and celebrated a culture of death: abortion, infanticide, murder, war, etc.
a. Then in the 4th Century (until the end of the Dark Ages), Christianity became the prevailing force, and promoted a culture of life. This was the first time around.
2. At the beginning of the Renaissance, there was a renewed interest in secularism/paganism, and the prevailing culture returned to a celebration of death.
a. Though the Reformation also took place at the same time, over the next two centuries, the Church regained its position as a dominant force and upheld the very foundation of our Judeo-Christian culture affirming life. This was the second time around.
3. With the advent of modernism/post modernism and communism in the 20th century, there was a return to the celebration of death, secularism, and paganism.
a. We are now in the third time around in the Church’s attempt to bring our culture into a celebration of life.
