Many women in the throes of their menstrual cycle crave chocolate, whether it’s the body’s way of signaling an iron or magnesium deficiency or simply a desire for comfort. Unfortunately, many of the chocolate bars on the market wreak havoc on hormones. They’re often made with sugar, additives, soy, and dairy, all of which disrupt the delicate cycle of hormone production. Sugar-laden foods can eventually lead to insulin resistance in the body, taxing the thyroid and adrenal glands, which are responsible for balancing hormones.
These homemade bars satisfy chocolate cravings with pure cacao, which provides magnesium, zinc, iron, and calcium to replenish the essential minerals and energy that flow out during menstruation. They also contain coconut, a source of sustainable energy, and flax seeds, which are especially helpful for those who are estrogen-dominant.
Makes 10 Bars
Line a 9 x 9-inch (23 cm) pan with unbleached parchment paper.
In a high-speed blender or food processor, combine the flax seeds, dates, coconut, pumpkin seeds, cacao nibs, cacao powder, coconut oil, nut milk, almond butter, maca powder, cinnamon, and salt. Blend on medium speed until a dough forms. Use your hands to press the dough evenly into the parchment-lined pan. Alternatively, roll the dough into balls and arrange on parchment-lined pan. Top with crushed nuts of choice, cacao nibs, and a dash of flaked sea salt. Refrigerate until firm, about 2 hours. Slice and serve! Store the bars in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
