Cherry Ghost-a.k.a vocalist/frontman Simon Aldred plus band-formed in Bolton in 2005, having taken their name from a favourite Wilco song. Following charismatic singles like "Mathematics," and the melancholic "People Help People," Cherry Ghost are now ready to unleash Thirst for Romance--an album Aldred has described as "Willie Nelson meets Walt Disney". What this curious description amounts to is an accomplished collection of warm, accessible songs that veer between alt country and indie rock, providing suitable frames for Aldreds sandpapery vocals and obscure lyricism. Cherry Ghosts influences seem fairly overt: you can hear wafts of Lambchop, Oasis, Badly Drawn Boy--and Willie Nelson--amongst the varied structures. The inaugural title track sets things off at a brisk canter, paving the way for a set thats diverse without breaking too much ground. The merry "4AM" is an obvious gem, as is the anthem-in-waiting "Mountain Bird"; these simple, affecting songs are contrasted by more ambitious material like "Roses", the string-laden "False Alarm" and the Beatles-style blues-rocker "Here Come the Romans." While Aldred isnt quite the poet he believes himself to be, he does produce some captivating lyrical images, and his band perform impeccably throughout. This album is perhaps the best I've purchased in the last 5 years. Its emotional tone, lyrics, vocals, music and melodies are the best of British. Try "Mathematics" as the better of any emotional rock opus of a song recorded since the 1970's. As far as I know they never recorded another album after this - an enormous shame.

I purchased this album when it first came out some 7 years ago and I still return to it time and time again. There is some magical element to all the songs that tie this album together that make it endearing and time less in many ways. I'm sure I've listened to it a 100 times or more and I'm still moved by the power of the lyrics and melodies. I often hear people say that modern music isn't as good as the albums produced back in the 60's, 70's and even the 80's but this easily stands up to the best out there. Its only a shame that 99.99% of the music listening public will probably never listen to it and appreciate the beauty it contains and never understand why the phrase "I seen demons dancing across factory floors" will send shivers down your spine each time. Of course you should buy it. But cherishing this album is the only way to give it the respect it deserves.

At last...Cherry Ghost swagger into view with an epic collection of perfect Indie anthems. The Johnny Cash influence can be heard on one or two country-ish tracks but the majority of the album re-invents the classic sounds of the best of our UK guitar bands from The Beatles to Blur, although CG also nod a wink at US bands like Wilco who have also taken country left field.
Melting on the ears like aural honey....tracks like the much played 'people help the people'..'Mary's on the mend'...'Roses'...'Dead man's suit' shimmer in their intensity.
Simon Aldrid is just a fantastic songwriter. I saw them live at the Barfly Club in Liverpool a few weeks ago and they were just superb in the confines of a sweaty club. Apparently they were excellent at Glastonbury where the Guardian critic awarded them 9/10.
Looking forward to seeing them in Manchester this weekend. Not for much longer will Cherry Ghost haunt the small clubs and bars. Their star is on a rapid trajectory across the musical firmament.

To me the lead vocalist sounds like Donald Fagen .Surely track 9 'Here come the Romans' is Steely Dan in disguise !!! i really can't tell the difference.If you are a fan have a listen.
Then there are a few tacks that sound like Neil Young but the album is refreshingly different even though Cherry Ghosts sound very familiar.
