Okay, I really don't understand all the hate for this album. It's a live record, and all live records have their flaws. As for the audio quality of this concert, I have no idea what the other reviewers are talking about; this recording is practically flawless in its clarity. True, in some areas Courtney's vocals get a little buried underneath the drums and guitar, and Zia's keyboards are not as audible as the other instruments, but that's what happens with live recordings. And, as the liner notes stated rather clearly, the show was recorded live with no overdubs, so any mistakes are simply part of the package!

'Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia' is quite possibly the last great rock 'n roll record to be recorded in the 20th Century, and it's easily one of the best albums released in the 21st Century to date. It also heralded a new era of exposure and popularity for the band and brought them global exposure. In the end, though, their relationship with Capitol Records soured with subsequent releases, and the Dandy Warhols went back to writing, recording, and releasing their music their own way. Regardless, 'Thirteen Tales...' is a gem, and to commemorate its release, the Dandies took the album on tour to celebrate its thirteenth birthday.

"Godless," "Mohammed," and "Nietzche" sound very much like they did on the record though perhaps a bit slowed down in tempo. Courtney's vocals get a little lost in all the effects on "Country Leaver," which isn't as strong a performance as on the original album, and the vocals continue to sound a little weak as "Solid" gets revved up. As the band jumps into "Horse Pills," they up the tempo a bit, and Courtney more talks his way through the song than sings.

The Dandy Warhols are one of my favorite bands, and Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia just might be my favorite album of all time. That said, if you don't care for live albums, you almost surely want to skip this one. Sound quality is actually pretty poor and the overall performance is just average. Courtney uses the lo-fi mic on just about every song, and the guitars sound mostly terrible. Can barely hear Zia's vocals. Drums sound good though.

Regardless, I remembered why I didn't rush out to get this one in the first place. Usually a live album is fun because it's sort of a Greatest Hits with some jamming or fun between-song banter. But this one is a live recording of them playing a single album front-to-back! It's like reading the screenplay of a movie based on a book. If you want to get the written version, why not go back to the original? In this case, same thing goes--if you want to hear Thirteen Tales, you're better off with the studio version.

I love the Dandy Warhols, I love the studio version of this album, and I loved seeing the band on this tour. But this recording is just plain terrible. It literally sounds like a fan's recording from somewhere in the crowd. The percussion and guitars are very heavy in the mix, and the vocals and keyboard can barely be heard. Some tracks just sound like a muddy mess from start to finish. Very, very disappointing.

Got this album for free. I would have not been happy paying for it, bottom line.

While it's cool to hear them perform this AMAZING album live in one continuous flow, the other reviews hit the nail on the head: the recording quality for this is piss-poor. Stick with the studio album.

Beautiful red vinyl, good live sound with no overdubs or rerecording. This isn't a studio recorded album, so don't expect studio sound (some people have complained about that). This is a great true-to-life experience of what the Dandy's sound live. Vinyl is not 180 gram, but still high quality.

Puzzled by the negativity on the production values, which sound fine to me. Have gotten bad-breath putdowns by PDX tubbies who insist the Dandies have no talent, are dilettantes, I can play guitar and sing and write songs better than them, their fans don't know good music from donuts, and so forth. But here, people who really like and get their music say this is a bad set? OK, but I just got the CD and think it kicks ass. Turn it up, suckas! Some of CT-T's vocals sound like they're in a tin can, but so did Neil Young's when he toured Greendale--it's an aesthetic, yo. And it works; think of what this album is about.
