Thirteen Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,102 ratings

Thirteen boys were born at midnight on the stroke of the new millennium. Twelve of them are dead. A violent cult called "The People" has executed each one and will stop at nothing to reach its last target: thirteen-year-old Adam. But Adam has no idea he's in danger. Raised by adoptive parents, he doesn't know his real birthday connects him to the other victims. Adam's life goes up in flames when a cult deserter tracks him down with a warning. He has until New Year's Eve to thwart the cult's plans to kill him--and the clock is ticking.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—In this dark thriller by a first-time British author, a sadistic self-appointed messiah leads his brainwashed cult in murdering boys born on New Year's Day of 2000. Now 2013, only a few remain, including protagonist Adam, who runs, fights, and kills for his life, aided by his love interest and neighbor, Megan. Interspersed with Adam's action-packed running around are various scenes of gruesome murders, torture, and cinematically threatening posturing by the cultist leader, Coron, and his fit teenage disciples. Hoyle removes Coron's mystique fairly early by explaining that the "Master" he serves is merely a "shadowy production, a sort of echo, in Coron's sick mind." He also ends the novel with a list of real-life cults gone bad. Descriptive passages ("Gasoline was spilled carefully, thoughtfully, arteries linking to veins") and well-formed chapters, which almost all end in dramatic single-sentence cliff-hangers, keep this work thrilling, if readers can keep track of the very large cast of dispensable bad guys. VERDICT Though characterization and dialogue are a bit weak, this gruesome survival story will most likely garner a readership among violence-craving, action-loving anglophiles.—Rhona Campbell, Georgetown Day School, Washington, DC

Easy to read and VERY creepy! I didn't read right before bed for fear of nightmares. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast moving and exciting
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 22, 2023
Still inspired by Lucy Mangan's "Bookworm" which I read in 2020, I am continuing to revisit books from my childhood and to explore some children's books written subsequently. This is definitely a book for the younger market (the suggested age range of 12-16 seems appropriate) but that doesn't prevent it from having a fast moving plotline with plenty of excitement and tension, especially in the second half of the book. The protagonists, Adam (significantly for the plot, born at the instant the new millennium began) and his friend Megan, were convincing in their 13 year olds' behaviour; like any of us, regardless of age, they did not always make the right decisions.

The book ends with a cliff hanger (my literary pet hate) but not one which absolutely requires the purchase of the next book, since a significant level of resolution has been reached.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Underdog
Reviewed in Germany on October 22, 2017
Thirteen is one of the best books I've read in a while. Im always on the lookout for underdog books and undoubtedly i found one here. Not only is the book amazingly written, but its also an eyecatcher. I've been asked quite a bit what im reading simply due to the printing on the sides and the short but precise text on the back. 10/10

5.0 out of 5 stars it's a great book.

it's a great book...Totally a must read. About a cult called 'the people' trying to kill thirteen year old Adam Grant because they think of him as an imposter trying to destroy the world as he was born at the streak of midnight on the first day of a new millennium, exactly 2000 years after the birth of the imposter before. According to the cult he should be killed before he becomes a man, before he turns 14. This is Adam's story trying to escape from the wicked plans of the cult along with the help of his very faithful friend, Megan.

31st Dec 1999, baby Adam is born on the stroke of midnight, a man is coming up in the lift carrying a sword, he sees himself as Herod and wants to kill any newborns born at midnight, Tyrone a nurse tackled the man, the man entered
a room to kill a baby, Tyrone again jumped on him taking both through the window

April 2000, a cult known as the people run by someone called the Master wanted all children born at midnight in 1999 killed, Coron who spoke for the Master searched for the children, Adams mother could not cope with him and placed him at what she thought was the Hospital steps, Adam was adopted and he was now thirteen, he had a best friend Megan, all the children born that night were murdered one by one, the only chil left was Adam but they couldn't find him

Adam was aware he was being followed but had no idea why, Coron wanted to sacrifice Adam before his 14yrs Birthday, if he or any of the cult managed to capture him it would be done, if Coron managed this he had been promised world domination, if Adam made 14yrs the power would go to him

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Brilliant
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 26, 2016
I fell in love with this book from the first page. I read it in one sitting and couldn't put it down. The plot is much darker than I had expected, and could be enjoyed by older readers who like books such as the Maze Runner and Divergent series. I would probably recommend this book for readers aged 12 + but a lot of older teens would probably enjoy this book too. It has a gripping and original choice of storyline, a good pace with plenty of plot twists and surprises to keep you on the edge of your seat. There are some lovely characters (as well as some brilliantly written villains), and plenty of opportunities to laugh as well as cry and a deliciously unexpected cliffhanger at the end. I will definitely be buying the sequel to this book!
