Thirteen is a 2003 American teen drama set in LA film and directed by Catherine Hardwicke, who helped write the script with Nikki Reed (Twilight franchise), upon whose diary from ages 12 to 13, it is allegedly based. Mostly filmed using hand held cameras it gives a quirky urgency to it all. This is a bleak look at a family in crisis and even if only a tenth is actual fact -it’s still dire watching as a bright young girl is swallowed up by the lunacy surrounding her.
The single disc opens to a screen offering play, scene selection and extras (making of, trailer, commentary on/off, deleted scenes). Thirteen generated a lot of controversy for its depiction of youth drug use (including inhalants, marijuana, LSD, and alcohol), underage sexual behaviour, and self-harm. With strong sexual themes (although little nudity), anti-social behaviour and language it’s definitely not family viewing and probably not for grandma either. A disturbing film on many levels it deserves a watch and is never dull.
After filming, real life abuse from parents forced Reed out of school and into home schooling and placed the film into limbo hell resulting in a long delay before widespread release -or cynics might cry clever marketing plot. Brutal, engrossing, controversial and most of all, thought provoking it deserves a *****.
