Great Science Fiction Movie - Less bombastic and more thoughtful than many.

Bought this in 2010 and keep coming back to it. Most of my professional career was spent as a nuclear physicist, and I've always been intrigued by concepts developed in science fiction. Recently, Carlo Rovelli, a specialist in quantum gravity, has written books outlining current understanding of the universe and reality. Specifically, "Reality is Not What it Seems" and "The Order of Time" which are well worth the effort. The Thirteenth Floor is a well made movie that posits another concept of what reality might be. Rovelli's approach is largely based on experimental results, but the movie is conceptually interesting and more thoughtful than, for instance, "The Matrix" series. For those who aren't aware of the advance of physics, you should be aware that the universe is granular (analog really doesn't exist), ephemeral (there's a lot of space that's occluded by motion - consider the size of the nucleus vs the atomic diameter), and ambiguous (see the Heisenberg principle).

remake of "world on a wire" or in german "welt am draht". lame. with a peg leg maybe better. I bought this but it does seem too dark as opposed to "welt am draht". I think this is incredible! Story is based in the US, there are not much of these films hashing out the hypothesis of simulation theory so I suggest you watch both this film and "welt am draht". I'll have to watch this maybe. The downer was that it was based in California.

A wonderfully mind-bending concept effectively realized on screen through superb direction of flawless acting. Would love to see a modern re-make with up-to-date special effects! Even so, it is doubtful that the delivery of the storyline, or the development and working out of the characterizations could be improved upon from this 1999 film. It is an enjoyably intriguing, exciting, engaging, murder mystery /crime drama embedded in a science fiction fantasy that is both fun and compelling. Right at the perfect ending, the awesome song "Erase & Rewind" by The Cardigans kicks in. This movie distinguishes itself by the uniqueness of its plot and thereby defies comparison with "The Matrix", "Inception", etc. Worthy of purchase and ownership; I consider The Thirteenth Floor to be one of the best in my library, an all-time favorite.

Weak Adaptation of Galouye's Novel and Underwhelming

I finally watched this movie, hoping for a more CGI version of Fassbinder's remarkably great movie "World on a Wire" (1973), or even something that was respectful to the original story. It was neither; I was astounded at how bad this movie was.

Notes before reading: 1) I read the Galouye story, "Simulacron-3," BEFORE watching either Fassbinder's adaptation or this one; 2) I am a fan of Armin Mueller-Stahl; 3) I enjoy sci-fi immensely. I really, really attempted to like this movie, mostly because of the numerical ratings it has received here and on imdb (and I don't read the written reviews beforehand).

The beginning really made me believe I was going to be awed: the great 1930s landscape, a film noir look, interesting-looking set designs, and (to top it all off) the GREAT Armin Mueller-Stahl! But what brought me awe quickly turned into balderdash. The story merely relied on 1/3rds of the original story, with the characters changing their original literary roles that gave the story so much depth. The questions of "what is real" in the original story was not the cynical plot of this adaptation. The special effects were the equivalent to those of a rock concert, with laser lights in fog, glowing eyes, and (straight from television's "Stargate SG-1" - but even less graphic) wormholes! I don't know what the budget was for this movie, but I guarantee that Fassbinder's wonderful adaptation was even less than the budget for this movie.

The story follows Douglas Hall and his attempt to find the killer of Fuller, his partner. Dennis Haysbert plays, with little depth, a detective (who has an entirely different role in the story) attempting to find the murderer. Vincent d'Onofrio looks and acts like a slightly-overweight John Malkovich, playing the most interesting character, the Simulacron-3 technician, but, with how interesting the other characters were, this really isn't saying much. Basically, you have a huge cast of TV actors and actresses, and there is a reason that they do TV (even though some have "touched" cinema, off and on).

I really don't know how far to go in the scenario, but I felt like I was watching a really bad, B-grade, made-for-cable-TV sci-fi that was relying more upon capitalizing on the success of "The Matrix" and others of its ilk than being true to Galouye's story. I tend to believe that the filmmakers were wanting to "jump on the bandwagon" at the time, regardless of the cost to the original story. Perhaps many of those reviews that give this movie such high marks were done by those anti-"The Matrix" fans. I really don't know. Maybe times have changed, and many of the reviewers may want to go back and replay this movie with some more objectivity.

Even more aggravating is that the movie must be so bad in the producers' eyes that they can't even stand to release the DVD in WIDESCREEN!!! That really tells you something!

I commented to my wife that more money was probably spent on the helicopter shots than the rest of the movie. I really wish Galouye's original story would be given the credit and respect it is due, along with the ability to do so with the CGI effects that are now the mainstay of cinema.

I give 2 stars for Mueller-Stahl (always a great screen presence, even though his acting is wasted here) and for the quite breathtaking ending effects of the future in the end - the end being the closest to that of the novel, but too late for the rest of the movie to be good.

I remember seeing this film years ago my first introduction to Vincent D'onofrio, Until recently I had only that first viewing to go by, not being able to remember its title. Then I saw a trailer for it on a different DVD.
This film is stylishly shot, as the main character says, the colour in the 30s could do with a bit of improvement.
Its nicely paced and, until you reach the end, the surprise, which is hinted at, is different to what you would expect but at the same time just what you are led to believe. That is what a good film should leave you with

From magnificent Daniel F. Galouye's book "Simulacron 3"

The plot may look simple at first sight, the world has created a new world within through the use of technology, but the story will lead us to an even unknown dimension that not even The Matrix would as clearly set as The Thirteenth Floor. The music, rendering and camera angles just fit the standards (higher than the average though) and there's a thick and refined work in here where Gretchen Mol and Vincent D'Onofrio take most credit for a delighting performance. The the pace is, to my concern, dedicated to the complexity of the characters and the implications of a parallel life and even life after death, rather than tricky special effects. That's maybe why this film did not hit a wider audience?

More questioning reality on film making please, this planet needs this!

Definitely a film worth watching twice, keeping and cherishing.

Most of my views on this film have already been put very effectively by other reviews. Thus: the "predictable" twists still work (and I didn't predict most of them!), the performances are well judged if subtle, and the atmosphere and production values (mostly) lift themselves above the genre and the budget. The movie is indeed worthy to be judged alongside The Matrix, plus or minus, and in my opinion slightly plus, although I did rate The Matrix highly. I'd also like to add that The Thirteenth Floor is an unusually, and genuinely, moral and humanistic tale, for something that is basically entertainment. I cannot reveal exactly why I hold this opinion without generating plot spoilers, but this aspect should not be difficult to spot. Finally, who else thinks there is a final possible twist right the end, and why do we not see more of the delicately beautiful Gretchen Mol?
