The other storyline in this book involves the investigation of partners Harrison “Harry” Fearing Pell and John Weston. Harry and John were introduced in the prequel to this story, The Daemoniac. Harry has been working as consulting detective and John is a med student who has been friends with Harry for a long time. Together they had brought closure to the case of the Mr. Hyde murders and now Harry has finally achieved one of her dreams, to be an investigator for the S.P.R., Society for Psychical Research. Now Harry is under pressure to prove that she is more than a one hit wonder. Both Harry and John are still recovering from the horrors of the Mr. Hyde murders and when they were brought in to investigate the grisly murder of an archeologist, they quickly realized that there was more at play here.
As the teams follow the clues it quickly becomes clear that there is a supernatural force that has been manipulating events with a larger masterplan in mind. I was kept on the edge of my seat as the characters kept being beset by misfortune and at each encounter were literally fighting for their lives. This story was definitely full of twists and turns. Even when there was a great reveal there was still more story left to play out. Nothing is certain as the story slowly unfolds and all I can say is that by the end you will want the story to continue.
If you have not read any of this Author’s previous books you might feel a bit confused at the start of the story as there is no big info dump. There is already a history between the main characters and you will feel like you are “walking” into a story already in play. With that said, do not worry, the information will come gradually and by the end all will be explained. If you are interested in reading the books with these characters beforehand then I would recommend reading The Daemoniac for Harry and John’s adventures. For Lady Vivienne and Alec, you would read The Fourth Element series.
I found this story quite enjoyable without having read The Fourth Element series. After having read The Thirteenth Gate, I would highly recommend reading all of Author Kat Ross’s books. Her characters really come to life, her plots and sub-plots tie together nicely, and the writing itself is very vivid, a most enjoyable read. I enjoyed the magic, gore, mystery, and gritty feel that I experienced while reading this book. I encourage you to pick up a copy of The Thirteenth Gate and give it a read, you will love reading this amazing story.
