From director Frantois Girard (The Red Violin), Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould is the award-winning 1993 film about the piano prodigy Glenn Gould played by Colm Feore (The Borgias, 24, Thor). The music consists almost entirely of piano recordings by Gould and includes pieces famously linked with him, such as Bach's The Goldberg Variations, and the Well-Tempered Clavier. The film is not a single narrative, but rather a series of thirty-two short films that include documentaries (five interviews with people who knew him) and recreations of scenes from Gould's life. Segments range in length from six minutes to less than one minute. The form was inspired by The Goldberg Variations, which was Gould's first acclaimed recording. According to Girard: "As Gould was such a complex character, the biggest problem was to find a way to look at his work and deal with his visions. The film is built of fragments, each one trying to capture an aspect of Gould. There is no way of putting Gould in one box. The film gives the viewer 32 impressions of him. I didn't want to reduce him to one dimension." Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould won four Genie Awards and Best Canadian Feature Film at the Toronto International Film Festival.

It's one of the those rare movies that requires the viewer to think as well as feel. I know, that's a shocker. Some of the reviews on Amazon by casual viewers who really didn't have a clue what they were getting into when they slipped this one into their DVD player reflect that (see those under the listing for the original release). I have nothing against popcorn, but this isn't your typical popcorn movie. If you don't know who Glenn Gould was - or wouldn't care if you did - you're not going to like it. If you like linear plots that can be summarized in three short sentences (or less) and you have a short attention-span, you're not going to like this movie.
The most important thing is, this is the re-release of the original DVD which has been out of print FOREVER. The original has been one of the top 5 hardest-to-obtain DVDs of the last ten years. Just check out the outrageously expensive copies of the original release for sale on Amazon right now. Rejoice, because this new re-release is identical to the original. The only difference is Sony now owns the distribution rights and the cover art is slightly different.
Take advantage of the low price of this re-release. The film was never intended to appeal to a large general audience. This isn't Bambi, with ten million copies available. The re-release isn't going to be around long and new copies will soon dry up. When that happens, the online sellers will jack the price of remaining copies up to the stratosphere, as they have with the original release. Don't say I didn't warn you!
My wife and I are Glenn Gould fans. We collect everything we can find and this was an upgrade to the 'converted-from-VHS' copy we'd been watching.
Excellent. Great acting, great writing.
