Thirty-Three and a Half Shenanigans was such a fast read for me! I enjoyed the pacing among all of the shenanigans involving Rose and Neely Kate. Two plots converged into one and were wrapped up in a nice bow very quickly at the end. However, the story was so laser-focused on the mystery at hand that much of the over-arching mysteries of the series took a back seat. I really want to see much more about Rose’s relationship with Violet, Rose’s mother’s history, Joe’s true intentions, and the mess with JR Simmons.
At one point Denise had me convinced that Mason had gone dark side. I enjoyed seeing Joe in action as the chief deputy, but wish there was more about his ‘partnership’ with Mason in taking down JR Simmons. I thoroughly enjoy Joe and Mason and their budding friendship. It’s begrudging right now, but there’s potential. They’ll be besties soon enough!! Meanwhile, Skeeter’s life on the darkside is quite topsy-turvy! I really feel like I have to root for that fella… he’s got flair. I’m sure Rose’s role as the Lady in Black will bite her in the behind soon enough. I really want to know who will find out first… Mason or Joe?! I’m not sure who would be more furious either, but I feel like it’ll be Joe.
I’m starting to feel there’s some ginger-hate going on given that TWO gingers (Hilary and Deputy Hoffstetter) have a major grudge for all things concerning Rose. Respect the red-heads! Unless they’re evil… which these two clearly are. :)
I want to say that Maeve is my MVP of this installment. She's sweet, she's observant, she's caring, and she's honest (as far as I can tell.) I love her!!
I’m still very satisfied with this installment of the Rose Gardner Mysteries! I’ll be eagerly waiting for the next novella and book! *****Five stars*****
There were several story lines going on in this book. Some seemed to intertwine and others weren't clear yet. Will need next book I think to resolve several issues. Everything came crashing together at the end and I felt a little stunned thinking there must be another few chapters to tie something together but nope Denise left cliff hangers, again. Very interested in seeing what happens with Skeeter and also what Mason is up to. I have some theories but we will see what is going to happen in next book hopefully.
I was so glad to have Rose & Mason interact more than they did in 32. I was worrying about that before. I was also glad to see Joe coming around more to accepting Rose's choices. I still love Joe but Mason is better for Rose and Joe needs to resolve the issues with what his father and his threats. Loved the talk Rose & Joe had at the nursery. I think Rose is getting worse though with putting her life at risk. Neely Kate was somewhat tricking Rose into doing things and I didn't like seeing her do that. She is supposed to be Rose's friend. And then she yells at Rose for her involvement with Skeeter. I think Rose is safe with Skeeter as he seems to want to protect her at all costs. Neely Kate is acting more irrational than normal. Must be hormones lol. I loved seeing Lady in Black again. Don't know if Rose will admit this but I think she likes being Lady in Black. Don't like her sneaking around behind Mason's back though but this time he was keeping too much from Rose too. "Ongoing investigating" my butt he could have told her something vague to keep her from imagining the worst. Turns out the worst wasn't too far off from reality this time though.
I totally recommend this book as well as all the books in this series. Awesome characters you want to stand up and cheer for or shout at depending on what they are doing. Denise is a very gifted author and storyteller. I look forward to any of her future books.
Overall, Mason is not really an exciting guy but he does seem to love Rose and I like seeing their relationship grow. I enjoy seeing Rose gain more knowledge and experience but she is still very naive when dealing with (seemingly) ordinary life situations. I am anxious to see Rose mature and become stronger as an individual. I cannot wait to read more about the other characters in this book and to see what other shenanigans Rose gets into in the future books.
