MILTON EZRATI has spent over forty years in the finance sector. Ezrati has extensive media experience through his position as senior economist, market strategist, and partner at Lord Abbett and Co., a money-management firm that handles approximately $132.6 billion in assets. Good Overview, but Dated Statistics

While this book is a good overview of the issues, I came away with both positive and negative feelings.

First the positive. It is an easily read summary of globalization issues. It will, if nothing else, raise your awareness of the importance of issues frequently seen in the media these days. If you are looking for a high level introduction, then this is the book for you.

Now the negative. The material seems to have been written around 2008/2009, even though the copyright is 2014. The vast majority of the quoted statistics are from 2008/2009 as indicated by the footnotes in the back of the book. That said, the book is wonderfully footnoted, and the "stale" statistics don't diminish the validity of the basic points.

I felt some topics that have arisen since 2008/2009 were missing, or only mentioned in passing; for example, in the chapter on China, no mention is made of the potential credit bubble (shadow banking system), housing bubble, or pollution issues. Other topics that could have been discussed better or were missing include Abenomics, central bank QE, climatic impacts like water scarcity, and corruption/ease-of-doing-business concerns. Also missing was a discussion of Africa and the future impact of its huge building wave of youthful workers.

Contrary to the more popular (and more prevalent) short-term economic analysis, Thirty Tomorrows tackles the more difficult topic of the long view. The book expands on trends that will significantly impact careers, families, savings and job prospects into future generations. I found Ezrati’s underlying optimism to be refreshing and his advice for where we should look for growth and opportunity practical. Thirty Tomorrows was an easy (doesn’t assume you need to be an economist to understand) and thought-provoking read.

I would recommend this book to every Gen X-er. Milton talks about a lot about much that is in the media these days. But more importantly, he talks about how the economy is going to change, where the jobs will be and where they won’t be. It will help anybody chart their professional course.

A very informative and insightful book

As a non-economist, I found the information contained in the book very intriguing. Milton does a great job of tackling difficult topics such as: economic policy, demographics, protectionism, foreign trade agreements, etc. He uses a myriad of facts and figures to further exemplify his positions. Although this book was written a few years ago, many of the points certainly hold true today. In the book, Milton discusses the severe economic danger of un-diversified energy exporters, such as Russia, Venezuela, and the Middle East. His predictions have certainly come true in the recent months. Congratulations to Milton on a 40 year career, and a wonderful body of information.

Thirty Tomorrows does for demographics what Friedman's "The World is Flat" did for globalization. Ezrati's analysis and perspective bring understanding to a phenomenon that has long-lasting social and investment consequences. The book presents a great baseline of the problems demographics will create, proposes both possible and probable solutions and the political, economic and social costs of those solutions. An empowering read.`

Ezrati addresses in a very readable manner the key issue for potential economic growth in many countries--demographics. Importantly, this is not a "Doomsday" book indicating that we should all sit back and plan for life after the "tipping point" has been reached. Rather, it highlights policies and approaches, social, cultural and economic that will enable the U.S. and other mature nations to deal with the effect of aging populations and continue to be competitive and hence prosperous in the changing global economic environment.

This book covers the waterfront, showing how everything is connected to everything else, aging demographics, women’s issues, new attitudes toward work and career, pay policies, the structure of the workplace, immigration policy, training, education, innovation. As I say, it covers the waterfront. It even carries things into how emerging economies will change and how the United States can provide global leadership. Amazingly it does all this in a readable way with no annoying technical jargon. He also sticks to reasoning and fact and avoids ideology. I learned a whole lot. I would recommend it to anyone interested in where this country’s economy and others are going.
