This book is an analysis of the Thirty Years War at a high level. The emphasis is on the interplay of politics and religious confessionalism in bringing about the war, conducting the war and then settling it. The analysis is clear and intelligent and if a reader wants to know, in a relatively short space of time, what the high-level actors did and why, and what were the contextual factors causing them to do so, this is your book. The sections on finance and recruitment are very admirable overviews of these topics.
It is emphatically not a narrative history of the time, or the war in particular, and those looking for a detailed description of the politics, diplomacy, campaigns, battles and general events should certainly look elsewhere.
In sticking so resolutely to its task, the book, although a model of clarity of expression, lacks the narrative detail or critiques that many or perhaps most readers would want in a book on this topic: it is an academic book in tone and purpose. But for any reader wanting high-level analysis and contextualization of the Thirty Years War, perhaps after reading a more general history but having the feeling that they weren't seeing the wood for the trees, or reading a military-focused book and finding that they wished to know more about the context of the particular campaigns, this book is very highly recommended.
