BT's This Binary Universe is really a follow-up to his 2004 soundtrack to Monster, a brilliant work of cinematic moods and ambient Americana. It was unjustly ignored by both the Oscars and the Grammys, where it should have at least been nominated for Best Surround Sound Recording. None of that has stopped Brian Transeau from going further down this path of expansive ambient electronica that takes him out of the techno-pop and trance direction he had been pursuing. This Binary Universe taps into BT's classical side, with expansive arrangements and intricate, albeit minimalist, thematic development. From the opening of "All That Makes Us Human Continues," BT reveals himself as a master of Eno-esque melancholy, as simple melodies evolve through an electro-orchestral instrumental palette. Lounge jazz with solos in the key of abstract, plaintive arpeggiated guitars, electro marches, minimalist hymns, and pastoral dreamscapes drive an album that seeks out joy and redemption, but not without traveling through the dark. The last track, "Good Morning Kaia," is a paean to his newborn daughter, and the most purely anthemic track on the disc.

I suspect the real raison d'être of This Binary Universe is the accompanying 5:1 surround DVD. BT creates an immersive space that's less sonic pinball and more audio sculpture, often revealing different aspects of his music than in the stereo mix. Each song on the DVD has a unique video that includes antique robots, surreal landscape drawings, live action fantasies, and abstract designs. It's the best way to experience this music, but whether you watch the DVD or tune into the stereo CD, This Binary Universe may be the first ambient symphony of the 21st century. --John Diliberto

This pertains to the surround sound DVD. If you have only heard the CD or, worse yet, an MP3 then you have not truly heard this work. I have been listening to electronic music since Switched on Bach by (then Walter) Wendy Carlos. I was 13 then. I am 52 now. I am also an electronic musician having worked with MIDI since shortly after it's commercial introduction. I would argue that Brian Transeau is an "artist's artist" and on a level with Jarre, Carlos, and other pioneers in this music. He is a genre defining innovator in his field. Some think he comes off as arrogant but, from what I know, he is very friendly, open, and will easily share his knowledge and love of this music. Emotional Technology was a brilliant pop electronica album. Song like Circles, Dark Heart Dawning, and the absolutely beautiful The Only Constant Is Change are great songs made better by Brian's wizardry. I can say the same for Still Life. This collection of mostly ABA' form self-professed asymmetrical meter "lullabies" is utterly captivating. It is meant to be heard in surround sound. In that way it measures up to all the "hype" of the Keyboard Magazine interview. This IS a Switched on Bach. I find the album to be spiritually uplifting - the hallmark, to my mind, of try art. Yet as someone familiar with the tech I can also appreciate the special impulse responses Brian recorded, the controller work and timbre morphing, the sound design, the "nano-timing", the stutters of the guy who brought stutter edits into the main stream, the arranging skills, the Csound coding, etc... I understand those that only enjoy one facet of Brian's work. But I enjoy it all and am always looking forward to what he will do next. When I had begun to lose hope that electronica was moving forward in any way I was saved by This Binary Universe. It remains, to date, my single favorite recording of all time.

I have been a BT fan for years ~ not as much as some, but enough so that I have turned a lot of friends onto his amazing and unique music. When I first received This Binary Universe, I saved it for my trip to work (midnight shift) and listened to the CD as I drove. I must say, first listen to the CD was disappointing; it sounded harsh, overly electronic, with stutters and noises that sounded disjointed and purposeless. I had to remember from the previous reviews that the DVD was the jewel of this pack, and waited until this morning to have a listen without interruption.

After listening to the DVD in DTS through my Xbox 360, I was stunned at what a difference it made to listen to it in surround sound. THE CD IS THE EXTRA; I doubt I will ever listen to it again. The DVD is a sonic landscape that I found stunning; from the quiet intro of the first track, to the lounge jazz of the second, I was floored at what Brian Transeau can do with sounds. the rest of it I will leave to the individual listener to discover for themselves. I haven't even watched the animation, although I will get to it eventually; I have so much more to explore just listening. BT brings us the future of music; no one has harnessed the complexity of DTS music like this, EVER. Not radio friendly in the least, this is music meant to listen to with a refreshing drink in a relaxing chair, musing over the day as the music washes over you and massages your mind.

In this masterpiece of electronic modern art, BT invites you into an experience of visual and audio meditation. The mood is one of spacious mesmerizing textures that envelop and warm you from within.

It takes time to appreciate the experimental nature of the selections, but when viewing the DVD and listening to the music, it starts to become a journey where you experience beautiful thunderstorms while floating high above the earth in an almost haunting splendor.

Watching the DVD brought beautiful meanings to the music as a full moon sheds a glistening path of light over waves and doves fly across the moon that opens into a blinking eye. Fantastical creatures and robots float by on ethereal wings. The DVD tells stories in an almost mythical way.

BT takes his time to reach orchestral perfection and studies elements of chaos and harmony with a sense of elegance. The extensive tracks with animated short films make this seem more like an artistic experience.

I love the video of Good Morning Kaia where text floats across the screen as images of BT's adorable daughter creates a celebration of life. What a beautiful message of love, no child could wish for more!

I wasn't sure what to make of this. I own all of BT's albums, and I love them all in their own way. I loved IMA, which was one of my first forays into electronica and trance, I loved ESCM, I loved the beats of Emotional Technology. This is unlike anything I have heard from him before, and really requires a dedicated listen.

This album isn't like those that you can just throw on and listen to while you are doing something else. You really need to just sit and listen to the music for what it is. At first I was turned off - being type "A", I have a hard time sitting still for anything. But you are rewarded with this album.

I'll be the first to admit - it won't be for everyone, but if you can really disconnect and try to plug into the music, this is one album where you really FEEL the music, and not just hear it. Closing your eyes and listening to this album is like going on an aural journey. It really is an incredible piece of work in its detail.

overall - 5 for 5. Highly recommend - but this isn't anything you would listen to in a club. Sit down on the couch, listen in 5.1, and just enjoy it for the musicality it is.

I honestly believe B.T. is the classical composer of our time - right up there with the best (Mozart, Beethoven and so on).

This Binary Universe is a unique piece of work by BT that combines electronic symphonic music (sometimes with beats) with inventive images. Difficult to pigeon hole and frustratingly difficult to share with other people who may want to listen with you (wife, kids, friends, etc) as this is a DVD I can only really enjoy alone: partly because you have to immerse yourself in the sounds and images but also because they take time to move through the gears - tracks can easily run over 10 minutes - so requires patience.

The 5.1 mix is the one to listen to. Lights off.

NB: I've tried to ration the amount of times I listen to the final track Good Morning Kaia: BT's music combined with the words for his young daughter are very special and I don't want them to become jaded through over listening. Its very special.

One of the most underrated albums in electro acoustic music. One of his best works and a work of art that trascends all frontiers and appeals to the highest reaches of human consciousness.

It is a work to keep closely and listen to throughout years to come.
