This "novel-ish" collection challenges your senses. It is true experimental literature. The prose bashes you over the head until you are as destroyed as the characters themselves. Forget scene and setting--this is Being John Malkovich.
It's not a light read, but that's certainly as the author intended. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to do more than look at words, who wants a fully absorptive experience. But be sure you're ready--because, while there are many shining, funny moments, these aren't always happy lives.
Quate reads like a millennial Kerouac. But if the Road represents a then-new kind of freedom, Quate shows us how our connectivity brings us a novel form of confinement.
Highly relevant. A must-read for 2016.
