This Can't Be Life by Shakara Cannon was a refreshing switch from all of the Gangsters and Thugs I have been reading about lately. Shakara Cannon has managed to tell us a daytime soap opera, that makes you envision the characters as she is developing them. She has given you an inside look at what happens when a child's innocence is stolen from them. But further she has managed to give credence to the saying "It Takes A Whole Village to Raise A Child". She has peppered her story with Talise's parents being there for Simone and Deon's family being there for him as well as his friends. She has giving you a glimpse into the lives of Simone, Stacy and Talise. Along with a couple of other friends like Deon and Nichelle. She was able to touch on homosexuality without painting it in a negative way. She allowed you a peek into their lives and made you become one with them. Making you want to shake them or tell them not to go around that corner or leave this one alone. Ms. Cannon seems to be an up and coming master storyteller and I for one can't wait to see what will happen next. If you are looking for a story filled with love, trust issues, self-esteem issues, sexuality issues and greed and lust, then look no further.

This was my first time reading something from Shakara Cannon. This book illustrate the lives of three character (Talise, Stacie and Simone) from various backgrounds with different agendas these characters provide antics and situations. For the length of time that it takes you to complete this novel, Talise, Stacie and Simone will become a part of your life. They'll say stupid things, and make dastardly mistakes, but when the book is closed, you'll be wishing that those characters were still around. You'll want to give them advice, steer them the right way, celebrate with them, and pat them on the back. This is a story for every type of reader, waiting on Part II.

After I finished reading this book, I had to go online to see what others were saying about it. I felt like I missed the story because with over 90 reviews, it received an average rating of a 4.5. So before writing my review, I sat down and pondered where I went wrong with this story. Then it hit me, I didn't go wrong.

The story was sprinkled with so much drama that I felt lost in the storytelling because so much was going on. My 3 star review might not be the fault of the author, but too many characters and issues are a bit challenging for me. It seemed the author wanted to touch on more issues then should be handled in one book: deaths, repressed memories, incest, alcoholism, religion, homosexuality and more. Let's take a look at the characters.

Simone Johnson continues to have the same dream night after night of a little girl and a man. She knows the little girl is in trouble at the hands of this man, but she is unable to see the faces and details. When will her mind release this trauma? Best friend Stacey was the relief this reader needed while trudging through the story. His one liners and comedy at times made me laugh out loud. I was excited when he met Tyron, but I was also shocked that he went for the terms of the relationship. Could he ever be a kept man? His heart says no, but the mind is a tricky thing. If you tell yourself something enough times, it becomes your reality.

Talise was my favorite character since her strength as a friend spoke volumes as Simone's BFF. When her mom told her that they were getting a divorce, I was worried how she would pass on that information to Simone, who was emotionally unstable to a degree. But like only Talise could do, she took care of business.

Friends, Simone, Talise and Stacey, are practically siblings and disclose everything to each other. Although from diverse backgrounds, all three unfortunately share the same disappointment -unsuccessful relationships. Simone believes she has finally found a compatible mate, but questions if the risk will be worth her while. Talise battles for a hint of joy amid personal calamities. Stacey replicates patterns that only cause heart wrenching pain. None of them realize how intertwined their personal lives actually are until Stacey stumbles upon damaging information that was never intended for him - or anyone else. He tucks this incriminating evidence away to be revealed in due time. What is exposed ultimately shatters life as they know it.

There were twists in this book that added another level of intensity to the story. I love to read a book that gives me more than I expected. From the beginning with the car accident, I was completely caught off guard. I asked myself `How could this happen now?' I was emotionally led down one street, but as the story unfolded I was actually taken down a totally different path. Once I recovered from the shock, I knew I would fully appreciate this book. After reading this title, I completely understand why it has maintained a high rating. This was my first read from this author and I am anticipating reading more of her work. Hopefully, there will be a part two that continues the story and we get to find out if Stacey is avenged.
