Bobby Timmons one of the prime leaders of the soul jazz era wrote some of the finest pieces in that era, such as Dat Dere, This Here, and Moanin'. Most people only know of Bobby Timmons as a sideman Most people only know of Moanin' in the setting of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Same as Dat Dere. This Here was written for Cannonball Adderley's Quintet, which Bobby was in, in San Francisco. But hey when you have a pianist like Bobby Timmons who needs those horns any way? This album demonstrates Bobby's talents to the full from standards and ballads like Lush Life to My Funny Valentine to his awesome pieces Dat Dere, Moanin', and This Here. This album truly shows Bobby, one of the finest soul jazz pianists, as a leader not a sideman and at his prime. Any one familiar with Dat Dere, Moanin', or This Here should definitely check this album out.

That Bobby Timmons was a great composer, this album is the proof of. It contains the first versions of some of his greatest and most popular compositions: "this here", "dat dere" and "moanin'. It's one of those trio records, that swings like a whole orchestra, yet conveys such an intimate feeling of joy. This record is so contageous that your fingers will start snapping by the end of the first chord, you just wait and see. Essential soul jazz at its very best.

This 1960 Riverside release stands as one of the best representations of a jazz piano trio in my opinion. "This Here Is Bobby Timmons" is by far one of the finest in its field, no doubt about it. From start to finish, this is a stellar album from Timmons. Sam Jones and Jimmy Cobb round out there trio and do a fantastic job. Jazz piano trio at its finest. Highly recommended.

While some of the playing is a bit uneven this is an essential album for Timmons fans because it was his first as a leader. The unevenness in my opinion comes from his performance of his main composition, Moanin'. It's a little stilted. In fact there are four of Timmons' compositions on the album: This Here, Moanin', Dat Dere and Joy Ride - almost half of the tracks.

Timmons's stint as Art Blakey's musical director the the Jazz Messengers honed his arranging skills, which are also evident on this album. If you are on the CD's page, you can listen to sound samples here: This Here Is Bobby Timmons. With the exception of the issues I noted about Moanin' the performances are solid and tight, both on Timmons' part and his excellent rhythm section (Sam Jones on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums). Also, I personally love his solo rendition of Billy Strayhorn's Lush Life. It shows Timmons' range as a pianist and a soloist, as well as his ability to interpret one of my favorite compositions. Also, his innate musical humor is evident throughout the album. Listen carefully and you will be rewarded.

This album was recorded for the Riverside label at Reeves Sound Studios in NYC on January 13 and 14, 1960, and released the same year. If you are a Bobby Timmons fan this is essential. If you are just discovering him I still highly recommend this album.

I love this music. It is from one of the best periods of the jazz history. I was lucky to be able to listen to this and other kinds of jazz music on the Voice of America Jazz Hour almost every evening during some years around 1960.
I study his left hand work on the theme of This Here. Quite impressing.

I heard Bobby Timmons in a cab awhile back. I spoke with the driver about who was playing. I told him it reminded me of Abdullah Ibrahim. The driver was South African so we got into a real conversation about the musicians. The piano here has a strong narrative line--like R and B or gospel. I just like to listen to it through my day.

In 1958 Bobby recorded My Funny Valentine as a duet with bassist Jymie Merritt on Art Blakey's Live In Zurich album, and in 1961 he recorded it solo on Blakey's Paris Olympia second concert. These are two of my favorite, most soulful piano renditions. While the version on this disc is wonderful, I much prefer the above two versions. However, anything you can add to your collection by this most underrated genius is a worthwhile addition. Dead at age 39, his passing was a terrible loss, and , so there will be no more This Heres(or Dis Heah, as it often was titled) making this collection important for your library. Sam Jones and Jimmy Cobb offer tender support.
