This Is Herman Cain!: My Journey to the White House Hardcover – October 4, 2011
Purchase options and add-ons
When Herman Cain speaks, people listen. When he debates, he wins.
If you care about the future of America, you have heard of the down-to-earth political newcomer running for president, the straight-talking man of the people with blunt assessments of what America needs. Originally overlooked by mainstream politicos and media, Herman Cain is truly a candidate from “outside the Beltway,” but no longer one who is being ignored.
BUT WHO IS HE?
While Herman Cain has been the host of a popular conservative Atlanta-area radio talk show called The Herman Cain Show, a different name originally captured American interest. As CEO, Herman Cain transformed Godfather’s Pizza from a company teetering on the verge of bankruptcy into a household word. Cain—as those with an interest in commonsense solutions to political problems will remember—is also famous for using the language and logic of everyday business to expose the fallacies inherent in Clinton assumptions about “Hillarycare” during a 1994 televised town hall meeting.
WHAT IS HIS STORY?
Herman Cain’s rise is the embodiment of the American dream. His parents, Luther and Lenora Cain, made a living the only way black people could in the ’40s and ’50s. Luther held down three jobs, including being a chauffeur; Lenora cleaned houses. They had two big dreams: to buy a house and to see their sons graduate from college. With dedication and hard work, they made both these dreams come true. In this thrilling memoir, Herman Cain describes his past and present . . . and the future he is determined to create, a future that will put our country back on track. His message resonates because he describes the American reality, and his down-to-earth personal tale of hope and hard work is both unforgettable and inspirational.
***
What is it in my DNA that years ago prompted me to forgo the ease of cruise control and take on the enormous challenge of doing my part toward making America a better place for my granddaughter and the generations to come?
Why do I, a son of the segregated South, refuse to think of myself as a “victim” of racism?
What is it that motivates me to insist on defining my identity in terms of “ABC”—as being American first, black second, and Conservative third?
Just who is Herman Cain? And how did I get this way?
Just a hint: it may have had something to do with lessons learned from my parents, Lenora and Luther Cain, Jr.

He also has the integrity not to get waylaid by secondary issues. After reading this book, I am very skeptical about the veracity of those who are charging him with sexual misconduct and harrassment. I am inclined to trust Mr. Cain in he-says vs. she-says contretempts.
Cain has successful experience at the highest levels of corporate Information Technology and corporate management, successful experience in banking and management of the Federal Reserve System, and some experience with print and broadcast media. He would be able to see through the obfuscation of these cultures as president. He has shown success in such diverse areas -- IT, large corporation, smallish corporation, print and broadcast media -- that an administrative position in government as president would not be daunting. His credentials for the job of running the country are better than any candidate since George Washington. His lack of experience in national politics is probably to his credit.
Cain lacks experience in foreign affairs, but none of the candidates (including the sitting president) has that. He lacks the Washington political experience of Gingrich, but Gingrich's personal baggage has shown his character to be flawed -- an impediment for Gingrich, whereas Cain's character seems to be excellent (unless it should turn out that he is indeed guilty of these offenses and is lying about them). At this stage of revelation, I would like to see a Cain/Gingrich ballot (not the other way around). If they win I would be optimistic about prospects for the country and for the world. J.C.W. West, 11-11-11
While the book has a few interesting perspectives - for example, Mr. Cain really believes he is bound to be our 45th president (which is apparent in several places throughout the book), and the number 45 is a special number for him and as a result has earned its own chapter! - I came to believe, as I read, that Mr. Cain is neither a braggert nor a cocky, self-centered individual, but rather simply remarkably transparent about his thoughts, beliefs, and expectations. I came to understand that he is simply willing to disclose much more about his own self and his thoughts, than most of the rest of us. He is not afraid for us to really see and know HIM. Hence my view that he - and his book - are a REFRESHING departure from the artificiality we so often see in politics (John Edwards, anyone?).
So my rating is not about Mr. Cain (to whom I might still give 4.5 stars!), but about his book. If you read this book I don't think you can help but get to know him... and develop affection and respect for him in the process.
One last note... Normally books like this have numerous acknowledgements regarding editing and the like, and often are actually written by someone else, disclosed on the cover and in the liner notes, etc. While there are a couple of folks named in the back for unspecified support, it appears this book was entirely or substantially written by Mr. Cain himself. If so, its solid writing, grammar, etc. are a further testament to Mr. Cain's great intellegience... not hard to imagine from one with his accomplishments.
My hat's off to you, Mr. Cain.
