I hope someday
You get to look
In the mirror
You are the fulfilment of your dreams
You are the prayers answered
You are all you needed
To feel complete.
Academia life is turning my head into a mushy pile, my only reprieve is poetry books. I want to read more poetry books about self love. It's so calming. I love it.
Author should have given in the blurb a clear/ accurate description of what people are actually getting.
I noticed that the author already edited the description to add: "This is How It Starts is a collection of poetry and illustrations about heart aches, self-love and second love."
Nice tuning in to readers.
*Giving this book a second chance*
Meeting you is like
Checking a list I didn’t know I had
Like unearthing a treasure,
Feeling the universe expand
I was nothing but
A mere mortal, all flesh and bone
You were some kind of magic
But here’s the best part:
Not at all made up,
And you liked me just as much.
This is How It Starts is a beautiful poetry collection about second love, the beauty and the downfall of it, and about self-love. As a fan of Dawn Lanuza’s first poetry collection The Last Time I'll Write About You I have to say that I thought this second collection was even better than the first. It managed to move me in ways the first one didn’t manage to accomplish and I’m so glad I got the chance to read it (thank you so much, Sue, for allowing me to borrow it). I have three favorite poems in this collection: choose your weapon, to your future and when i said nice to meet you, i meant. These three show the wide range of topics and poems this collection has to offer but they also made me really fall in love with the written words on the page in front of me.
choose your weapon
We’ve all been trained to be tough
To survive this world but
I hope you remain soft with your heart.
If you come across someone cruel,
The way they treat you is often a reflection of how they treat themselves.
If you are looking for a poetry collection about love that is tender, sweet and brutally honest at the same time then give this one a go. This is How It Starts really is worth all the praise and deserves to be a part of your poetry book collection.

The poetry was simply written, sparse with any exciting imagery and that was what I missed here.
