Conrad Nomikos has a long, rich personal history that he'd rather not talk about and a job he'd rather not do. Escorting an alien grandee on a tour around a shattered post-nuclear war Earth is not something he relishes, especially when he becomes central to an intrigue determining Earth's future.

The other one is Doorways In The Sand. This Immortal is a brilliant combination of fantasy/hard science fiction that sets a high bar for the rest of the writers of fantasy particularly. Nearly all "fantasy" fiction is so simplistically and repetitiously formulaic that it rapidly causes fatal levels of ennui in the poor reader. Unfortunately, the many other writers who turn out this drivel, have obviously never read This Immortal. The way Zelazny weaves elements of Greek legends with a rather interesting hero's journey, while building a future Earth in rebellion, is compelling. Zelazney also keeps you on the edge of your chair, with constant new surprises, both in the multiple interwoven story lines, but also in the evolution and interaction of the many characters. An amazing tour de force by a master writer. If you want to learn to write great fantasy/science fiction, study this novel, as each time you read it, it will reveal to you new levels of writing technique brilliance. Don't miss Doorways In The Sand, another unique story by Zelazney, from which aspiring writers can learn many lessons on how to write brilliant novels.

5 stars for the book, 0 stars for the Kindle Edition. The Kindle edition is chock-full of typos, missing text, missing punctuation, incorrect words or all of the above.
DO NOT BUY BOOKS by this publisher. They do a deeply shoddy job and seem not to proof read. Just a couple of recent examples:
"Tour friend will become a killer" Vs."Your friend will become a killer"
"Take care, Konstantin have been dreaming bad dreams" Vs. "Take care, Konstantin. I have been dreaming bad dreams"
The are representative, and the book is littered with them. It makes reading an unpleasant chore.

This book is published by iBooks and shares the problems described by other reviewers of the Kindle edition. The paperback book now has typos and mistakes everywhere -I bought it in November 2020. Its like trying to reading a terrible translation.
Amazon has allowed their publisher to destroy a classic book by Zelazny. Very sad.
It seems like the paperback now has the same problems as the Kindle edition that other reviewers have talked about.
Do not buy because the book is now unreadable!

Starts off in a very laid back manner and only gradually does the plot become apparent. And it’s not bad. With some very interesting backstory. The smouldering ruins of the earth. The off planet humans as refugees in the Vegan Empire. No they didn’t do it, we did it to ourselves , which they find incomprehensible. But there really isn’t much on this. Mostly a little trek through the ruins, caught by cannibals, a few ungainly dues ex machine moves thrown in. Well written/crafted but quite short and with a feel of having been tossed off quickly by a writer capable of much better but in a rush. Contractual obligation maybe?

Zelazny's first novel and one of his best. It has his usual blend of lyrical, evocative prose filled with all sorts of allusions contrasting Noir cynicism with mythical awe while making both attitudes seem completely sincere. It is both wistful and hopeful, disillusioned and naive. It is a science fiction tale with the atmosphere of a mythic fantasy. Enjoy this romp through a post apocalyptic Earth reduced to a resort for wealthy aliens.

This is a unique novel. I have never read anything quite like this. A dying, post-apocalyptic Earth, receding back into the primordial myths of antiquity. Which sounds like high-concept sci-fi. But it's just the backdrop for interplanetary political intrigue, which frankly I never quite got my mind around. And then toward the end, it abruptly turns very pulpy with action and battle sequences.
The narrator is the "immortal" of the title. He only gives bits and pieces of his background. He comes across as jaded and lackadaisical, as one might be after a couple of hundred years, and yet fiery and determined when the situation demands it - traits that might be required for one to survive a couple of hundred years.
The ending does seem a little bit pat, like the author reached his page quota and decided to just wrap things up. Also the Kindle translation has numerous errors, frequently of the variety where "rn" gets rendered as "m", so "burn" becomes "bum" and so forth. There are enough of these errors that they become mildly obtrusive when reading.

I enjoyed the mutated humans and beasts as well as the involvement in human affairs of the alien Vegans. The tour guide{the Immortal} is a very interesting and mysterious character that held my attention. On the negative side of the ledger, I must say that I was not emotionally involved with the cast or the story. This short novel never really captivated my interest or made an impact on me. I doubt if I'll be able to recall much of the plot in a few months.

A classic work of love, violence, hope, loss, and possibilities that blends science and fantasies into a legend of what will be.
Unfortunately, it reads like someone machine scanned a print copy and offered it for sale. Typos, nonsense, and repetitive issues tell me that the current vendor cares nothing about the reader or the damage done to the legacy and reputation of one of the greatest authors of the late twentieth century.
Story: amazeballs. Read it now.
This version: Junk. Buy it elsewhere.

Did not age well.

The story takes its time to get started but uses nationalist stereotypes from beginning to end. Female characters are there to be girlfriends, lovers and people who are hurt so the men can feel something. If you compare this to Dune which came out in 1965 as well. Even Dune doesn’t have so many female characters but those it has are three dimensional and have their own motives. The background story is interesting but let down by people being described only by where they come from as of it sums them up completely.

Full of scanning typos

The book itself is great, but the editing of kindle file you are about to read must have beendone by some dodgy fly-by-night outfit who simply didn't care. There are noticeably many typos here, of the kind that could only result from plopping an old book on a scanner and running some character recognition software - with the only proof reading being entrusted to a skim-read by a tired intern.
Zelazny is a classic of sci-fi. Do yourself a favour and buy a different copy.

Horrible edición electrónica
Reviewed in Spain on June 21, 2019Verified Purchase

loved the format of the book as my other copy was a very old original printing mass paperback which did not withstand the handling of the years very well. Happy with the supplier and it also came earlier than expected,
