"an engaging story of a couple given a second chance at love.... Author Jill Blake proves that true love may not always happen without a few bumps along the way." -Rachel's Willful Thoughts (TRR)

From the Author
1. Characters - the hero and heroine of each book return as supporting characters in other books.
2.Setting - Philadelphia and environs. Some of the heroes/heroines may spend time elsewhere (e.g. in This Time for Keeps, Isabelle and Luca visit Amalfi--a town in southern Italy that Luca calls "heaven on earth"); Philadelphia, however, remains central to the story.
3.Happy ending. Angst may be all well and good, but for me, it's the happily-ever-after that makes a love story worth reading.

I haven't read the other books in the series but presume (based on the book description) that they revolve around secondary characters that grace the pages of this romance novel. The title gives you a clear idea of the setting and the occupation of at least one of the lead characters.
Isabella, a gynaecologist/obstetrician, from the affluent DiStefano brood, is ruing the lack of romance and passion in her life when she meets handsome Luca, a professor at Princeton, at her friend's wedding. Light flirting gives way to something more intense as sparks fly between them. A passionate affair ensues while they spend a well earned vacation in the charming Italian countryside.
While neither appear to be serious about each other, their affair ends abruptly when Luca belatedly discovers she is a career woman and pushes her away. They meet four years later, and sparks still fly, but something has changed the Doctor's life in the interim.
A shoot-out as the hospital leaves her injured both physically and emotionally. Family friend Jake, a tragic victim himself, guides Isabelle into an alternate career of clinical research when she loses the motor skills needed to perform surgeries.
Will Luca's re-entry into her life triggers changes for better or worse? Is she wiling to give him a second chance? Will he redeem himself or will his painful past separate them once again?
The book is an entertaining read. The author's professional experiences as a doctor, her eye for detail and the interesting supporting characters adds authenticity to the story. While Isabella's struggles and her strength of character touches you, the transformation of her anger, hurt and lust into love for Luca is not dwelt with, as the romance is built up from the flawed-hero's end. His lack of knowledge about her career is hard to accept as he is a business partner of the spouses of her best friends Jane and Sam, and knows them well enough. Isabelle's frequent and long monologues mar the pacing of the book.
The romance sequences are clearly in the "spicy" category. If you enjoy Harlequin style novels and chicklits, you will enjoy this breezy tale.
Dr Isabelle DiStefano enjoys her work as and OB/GYN. She keeps her private practice hours as well as working at a clinic for which she has volunteered since her days as an intern. She is good at her job, and has put in the time and effort it takes to excel at her chosen career.
Luca Santoro is a friend of Isabelle's friends, and business partner to their husbands. A very busy, and very rich Italian man, Luca has been deeply hurt by his first wife, a career woman who chose her career over her husband, in a way that has left Luca devastated, and unable to trust women.
When Luca and Isabelle first meet, it is as if they have met the other part of the souls. But, Luca's past pulls them apart. Until years later, when the two meet again. They have both grown in the intervening years. Luca has watched his business partners have successful and happy marriages with their career minded wives and has come to realize that it is possible. Isabelle has been seriously injured in a senseless shooting in which she simply collateral damage, and is learning how to be something other than a successful OB/GYN.
Ms Blake deftly handles the mistrust and hope that her two protagonists must learn to deal with in order to have a hope of love.
Definitely an easy read, but leaves you with a lot of smiles!
