"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? Spoilers ahead! The hero is the heroine’s business client, but he lures her into a sexual set-up, coming out of a hotel bathroom half-naked, expecting her to succumb to his sex appeal immediately. She does. Then, in their very first sexual encounter, he “forgets” a condom and ejaculates inside her, then follows that with virtually forcing her into anal sex — without condom or lube — then immediately returns to vaginal intercourse without giving either of them an opportunity to clean up or use a condom, which he apparently thinks is unnecessary. Not only is this recklessly unsafe sex, it’s really just gross and not at all erotic.
Thereafter, he harasses her with phone calls and texts, follows her, shows up at her workplace where he physically throws her over his shoulder and drags her out to the street. He later shows up uninvited to her home pounding on the door demanding another chance to “remind her” how great the sex is by forcefully seducing her. The heroine, instead of being terrified and getting a restraining order, is worried that she will fall for this creep and be emotionally lost when he inevitably dumps her because he is too rich and handsome for her. This pretty much sums up how abusive relationships begin.
I love a dominant alpha male hero, but This Man is a controlling, violent stalker and a total jerk. The heroine not only takes his verbal and physical harassment and abuse, she also works for a boss who calls her “flower” and expects her to accept sexual harassment from other male clients.
We deserve better. Even in a fictional world.
I’ve never read anything like this before. This couple has some serious issues to work out and I still don’t know if I love or hate them. While Jesse made it difficult to breathe at times while I turned the a/c down as low as it would go, Ava was enough to make me want to chuck my kindle. Their dynamic is unlike any I’ve been exposed to. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.
Some of the twists were apparent from early on but when I was confronted with Jesse’s behavior at the end, I was about ready to chuck him along with Ava. I mean, come on! He decided to do what he did! No one can force you into taking the step he took!
So, while I basically enjoyed the story, I was po’d at the decisions this couple made at the ending. However, I’m hooked enough to want to know how they get through this. What’s going to happen to bring this couple from where they are right now to a better place? Will Ava change and become less annoying? Will Jesse be able to relax and let some of the everyday control go? Is it possible I’m going to need to purchase a wind tunnel fan to get me through the next book?
Rating is based on the fact that I will be continuing this series.
Safe – OW drama, H doesn’t have sex with anyone but h
No apparent triggers
Jesse, Lord of the Manor, is the most frustrating man I have come across in the book world. But he captured me. His need for control was unbearable at times. I yelled back at him in Ava's defense. Then I was happy when these two would "kiss" and make up. Even more excited when Jesse would start with his count down. I would love to be Ava shoes at those times. Jesse is so so sexy and confident. He has never allowed anyone in his heart. He would go through life's motions. He has his two best friends Sam and Drew that are there for him through and through. Sarah is his assistant and long time friend. No matter what we all know she wants more than friendship and I, like Ava, do not trust the woman.
Ava is strong and independent. She is successful and never shows weakness. Okay maybe in all aspects she won't show weakness until a Mr. Jesse walks into the room. I love her friend Kate whom seems to take a liking to Sam. I loved this story and at the end I was a mess. Jesse and Ava at this point may need to take time away from each other or they will rip each other apart. We are left with a heart quencher. Can these two make it in one piece in book two? I sure had my fingers crossed.
