Look, I'll ignore that you've apparently got a British guy working as a CIA agent, which is pretty much impossible, and that they go around breaking international law with very little subtlety and somehow fail to start a war with China. I'll ignore that Tom Hardy is terrible at pretending he knows how to speak Russian, and the guy who is not Tom Hardy is terrible at pretending he knows how to fight. I'll also ignore that the whole spy revenge plot that crops up in like the last five minutes of the film to give our protagonists the chance for a revealing heart-to-heart during a car chase is tacked on like part of a second-grader's art project. In short, I am willing to suspend almost all disbelief.
The one thing that irritates the living hell out of me about this movie, and about many romantic comedies, is how completely mediocre the female protagonist is. She works in a consumer research company. She collects Gustav Klimt posters. She brags about having done gymnastics in high school or university or secretarial college or something. She has apparently never played paintball. The only things she has going for her are that she's upper-middle-class and like 100 pounds. And based on that alone, we are supposed to believe that two crazy-hot adventurous talented sculpted polyglot guys who spend half their time gallivanting around the world and taking out criminals are head over heels in love with her. I simply could not get past this fact.
That said, Tom Hardy is as always a gorgeous and magnetic presence onscreen. If you're looking for a movie that allows you to stare at Tom Hardy's luscious lips and beautiful blue eyes while he flirts shamelessly with the camera, enjoy. Just know that you are probably a lot cooler and more interesting than his love interest in this movie, and yet neither you nor I will ever get to date Tom Hardy.
I know. Reality is terrible.
The story is beyond predictable, but that doesn't mean it's not worth "date night".
The movie is about two close friends. They are CIA partners, you know that there is a brotherhood that only forms when you put your life in someone else hands. That relationship is put to the test when they both fall for the same woman ... in walks femme fatal, Reese Witherspoon whose character contains that charm which has made Reese a mainstay in cinema.
The plot is a road-map that lists all the main attractions along the way. You know where it's going, everyone's been there before, yet you still have fun. This movie is above all else a romantic comedy. It has just enough action to help guys enjoy the movie with their girls. It throws in a bit of situation and physical comedy to keep it from being sticky sweet.
You'll probably know what's going to happen before it does. That's ok; and it's ok to laugh out-loud even when the jokes are completely obvious. Allow yourself to enjoy this no brainer comedy and you might even find yourself rooting for the inevitable evolution each character has.
Still not sure? Rent before you buy and decide for yourself, after all, no two people are alike.
I hope this was helpful. Enjoy!
