This Piece Of My Heart, the first novel from Robyn M. Ryan, is also the first sports romance I've read, and I very much hope it won't be the last. The sports theme gave me a fascinating glimpse into a world that's unfamiliar to me, and the romance is refreshingly genuine and fun. The characters are likable and engaging, and I sat up ridiculously late reading it because I so much wanted to see what happens next!
I especially enjoyed the relocation of the action as Andrew's career progresses, and getting a virtual look at places that I've not yet been to as he shows Caryn around, especially as I got the chance to see them through her eyes. I also loved seeing the way the relationship gradually transforms Caryn from a shy girl dominated by her privileged but suffocating background into a confident, creative and loving young woman.
A good story inevitably needs some conflict, and Andrew's ex and Caryn's father provide it, with the behavior of Caryn's father in particular proving to be the catalyst for what to me are two of the best scenes in the book as he tries to assert his authority over his daughter and her boyfriend.
Although it ends with a satisfying resolution of the story for now, the book also leaves plenty of scope for further development of the characters and their adventures, and I'm very much looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Robyn M. Ryan spun a wonderful tale of a married couple’s ups and downs after a tragedy hits. The emotional rollercoaster each went through during the recovery of Andrew’s hockey accident, one moment they were up and then the rollercoaster would take a diving plunge and just when Andrew and Caryn rollercoaster was making a gradual climb back something happen and it would take another diving plunge which kept me turning the page. I really wanted to give this book a 5 but how the ending was it kept me from giving it that one extra star. But know I feel like Andrew in the book need patience until the continuation of Andrew & Caryn’s story.

It is about Caryn who is the only child of a power couple and is set to take over at her father's multi-billion dollar company when he retires.
To say that these people are helocopter parents is an understatement. Caryn insisted that she have her university education away from the parents that reside in Ottawa. Of course the parents bought the townhouse in Toronto where she is trying to finish up her degree at that university. Caryn is struggling with some of the courses, thus she is taking a summer course to get a needed credit in order to keep on track with her schedule. Everyday she happens to see a hot guy jogging, but he doesn't seem to notice her until they happen to collide into each other.
Thus begins the slow romance between Andrew (who happens to be a professioanl hockey player) and Caryn. Of course her parents don't approve and she gets cut off financially.
This is a story that passes over a lot of time, and therefore allows the characters to become more and more developed. I love getting stuck into a story with lots character development, so in that respect, this was a perfect book for me. But what I don’t enjoy is an insta-love romance, and this book is full of it. Personally, I like a slow-burn romance that keeps the reader on their toes about where the relationship will go next. For Caryn and Andrew, this is most certainly not the case. However, this quick connection does allow the story to focus on other aspects; such as, friendships, family relationship and school and job pressures. The story is full of action, so don’t feel like you are missing out just because they get together so quickly!
I loved the supporting characters, especially Caryn’s friendship with Lauren and Andrew’s relationship with his brother Tom. These really helped the story to feel more developed and believable, and I am so intrigued to see what is happening with Lauren and her love interests!
So for those who like to see the characters fall in love quickly and follow their story, this is the perfect book for you. The author’s writing style was wonderful and so easy to read; it didn’t take me long to get through it at all! Although I am not a fan of insta-love stories, I will definitely be looking out for the sequel and I am curious to see where Caryn and Andrew’s relationship is headed!
