The underlying message of this slim book is that individual action can make a difference in preventing environmental damage, and that children should be taught to take responsibility for protecting the environment. Each chapter includes discussions of critical issues, a list of activities that are environmentally beneficial, specific learning activities, and pertinent books and organizations. With so many divergent aspects crammed into the limited space, the resulting text is rather uneven (for example, there are too many lists of organizations and addresses). The lengthy discussion of vegetation and inhabitants of tropical rainforests seems out of place, and the learning activities tend to be rather superficial. Though this provides numerous worthwhile tips at a low cost, a much better choice for library purchase is John Seymour and Herbert Girardet's Blueprint for a Green Planet (Prentice Hall, 1987).
