Here's a flat-out classic. In 1962, Czech author-illustrator Miroslav Sasek created This Is San Francisco, another installment of his series of children's travel guides (This Is Paris, This Is London, This Is New York). With his usual distinctive and charming style, Sasek tours the sights around the City by the Bay, including Lombard Street, the cable cars, Fishermen's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, and Chinatown. This 2003 reissue edition also includes a number of annotations about how certain locales have changed since the book was published. There's a good chance that anyone who grew up in or near San Francisco will remember this book fondly. Everyone else has a joyous discovery ahead. --David Horiuchi

About the Author

M. Sasek was born in 1916 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. An author and illustrator, he is best remembered for his classic stories on the great cities of the world. He died in 1980.

Miroslav Šašek (November 16, 1916, Prague – May 1980, Wettingen, Switzerland) was a Czech emigre author and illustrator, best known for a series of books for children titled This Is..., which he signed M. Sasek.
Originally trained as an architect, he had just begun a career in children's literature when the Czechoslovak coup d'état of 1948 prompted him to emigrate to Munich, West Germany, where he worked for Radio Free Europe from 1951 to 1957. This Is Paris appeared in 1959, starting what ultimately grew into a series of eighteen books. Šašek's This Is London received the New York Times Choice of Best Illustrated Children's Book of the Year in 1959, as did This Is New York in 1960. This Is New York also received the Boy's Club of America Junior Books Award in 1961, while This Is the United Nations appeared on the International Board on Books for Young People Honor List in 1979. Šašek was living in Paris at the time of his death, which occurred on a trip to Switzerland.

Just delightful! Yes, it's several decades old with a few new updates, but it manages to convey the sense of "This is new! This is exciting!" of someone visiting San Francisco for the first time in 1962.

This is true of many of M. Sasek's other books, though some of the later ones lack the fun of the earlier MCM graphics. I also recommend his Rome, Paris, Munich, and Way to the Moon. They are probably best suited for ages 6 and up, but adults love them, too.

sasek's books are all visually lovely, no doubt about it, however they are also incredibly informative, which i quite appreciate. this book is littered with amazing images and interesting facts. i also found this entry to be a lovely springboard of ideas on a recent trip to san francisco (the largest chinatown in the united states!).

and as with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the city...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the city WAS as well as the present day differences.

i highly recommend this book if you are interested in either san francisco, or simply in wonderful illustration.

The illustrations, while fifty years old, have a freshness and vibrancy that has not dimmed with time. The text is a refreshing change from so many of the books we see for kids these days: it is informative and intelligent, while remaining fun and engrossing for the young reader/listener. Our three-year-old pleads with us to read the book to him over and over again.

This is a favorite of my family and myself. I have purchased a copy for my niece and my son to go along with the copy my parents still have from my youth. every home needs one! Having grown up in SF this remains a special reminder of the history of the place and the illustrations are marvelous. I don't know if individual prints from Sasek are available, but I'd love to get some framed from this book.

If you've ever wanted a quick taste of a place, This is San Francisco is a great primer for any child.

I own a couple of the books from the first edition and the new edition is quite good, the san francisco now page, mentions some the changes since the book was written and is a nice addition. Good Quality, glad they decided to re-edit them. looking forward to completing my collection
