Clarissa, a lovely young woman of the South and Philip, a Union captain of the North are thrown together. They both have commitments that throw up obstacles that prevent them from being together. The reader must be patient as they don’t meet until well into the novel. This is necessary because of the development of their individual obstacles that must be overcome.
This blooming relationship is developed with the backdrop of the Civil War. Ms. Swift covers the many happenings during the war, not the least of which is the grotesque mutilation of soldiers on both sides. Tragedy strikes the family members and we are made to feel the painful losses of those family members. The main point of view is Clarissa’s and Philip’s but occasionally other characters have a POV too. The reader must be on their toes as POV will switch within a chapter at times.
There is a surprise ending, unexpected but worthy of Ms. Swift’s superb craft at bringing the story to a proper ending.
Descriptive language of the Civil War, progressive development and increasing dilemma, especially for Clarissa are well done.
Although this reviewer is not into the sensual or erotic portions of this novel, he rates it five stars for the descriptions of the war happenings, the character personalities, the scenery and the emotional elements that flesh out the characters.
