"Cassingham is a humorist for the Information Age, an Internet-savvy satirist and social commentator. The Jay Leno of Cyberspace." --Los Angeles Times
"Truth is stranger than fiction and sometimes it's funnier too." --Washington Post
"How did he get so popular so fast? Well, for one thing, he writes funny stuff." --New York Times
"Randy Cassingham has a passion for the truth. And you'll never believe the stuff he's dug up.... Truly stranger than fiction." --USA Today
"For years, Cassingham has been searching the papers for amazing but true news stories or headlines, to which he attaches a witty, funny or borderline-sarcastic tagline. It's nearly impossible to read these and not laugh out loud." --Philadelphia Daily News
GREAT compilation of really short stories - 1-2 paragraphs each. I got hooked on Randy's weekly e-mail publication This is True several years ago, which I also recommend).
This book is a compilation of stories found in the daily news press from around the world. They are real stories, and often can easily be verified with a simple Google using some of the keywords in the story. Randy seeks out true stories with bizarre contents. Some are sobering, and others are just incredibly funny about the stupid things people (and occasionally nature) do. Examples include crooks that botch their evil plans or public officials with less intelligence than military intelligence. One of Randy's favorite topics is zero tolerance idiocy.
I recommend this book as something to keep in the parlor or bathroom for casual reading. Each story stands on its own.
Some of these stories are so strange, it's hard to believe they are true. Randy researches all his stories, though, and writes in an entertaining yet informative way. I find it hard to put his books down, especially this one, which I have re-read several times.
If you're looking for some entertaining reading about real situations people get into, I highly recommend this book, or any of Randy's books. I think you'll get a lot of chuckles, and a lot of thought-provoking moments.
Having been a long time reader of Randy's "This is True column", this was a great opportunity to pick up the earlier stories that I missed!
Randy's stories always make you think, and usually either make you laugh, or shake your head in pure disbelief of the stupid and wacky things that people do!!
Because they are all verified true (reference supplied), they are even more amazing.......................you won't believe what people can get up to!!
There are a year's worth of stories in the book, each taken from his weekly column, and they are all very short, so, like another poster said, you can read for a few minutes or I few hours.......................but.....................I tend to find each book addicting, and keep saying to myself "just one more story".....
And then, you can go sign up for his free weekly column, and get even more of the good stuff!
I also find myself rereading them every year or so, and enjoying them just as much over again!
I love Randy's stories. You can't make this stuff up - it's all TRUE! The sad part is that there really are people in the world that are this stupid/clueless/whatever....and most of them vote, drive cars and have jobs.
You have got to read at least one of his books - then subscribe to his "This is True" email for more enjoyment weekly in your inbox. Before you ask, no, I don't make any money off of my endorsement, I have just been reading True for so long that I have to encourage everyone else to read it, too!
I've been reading Randy's This is True columns for years When I realized I'd missed more than a few year's worth I decided to pick up this book to see where it all started. I certainly was not disappointed. Right from the first page were the witty retellings of of strange news stories the antics of our elected and appointed officials and other people and animals in our strange, strange world. Randy's witty taglines to each story are the frosting on the cake.
This Is True has long been one of my favorite online subscriptions, so this collection is a delight. The examples of human idiocy and ignorance are shake-your-head amazing, and Cassingham's tag lines are the perfect wry commentary. It's a great book for dipping into to make yourself laugh and feel smarter. It's also excellent for reading aloud in the car to keep the driver awake--just beware of making him or her laugh too hard to drive safely!
This was a great read and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading. It is broken up nicely so that it doesn't have to be read at one sitting. It reminds me of The Darwin Awards book which I also have in my library. It is amazing how some of these articles could have actually happened; thats how utterly ridiculous some of them sound. Can't wait for the newest book in this series to be published this year. Thanks for a great read and for compiling all of these "true" articles. Dr. Edwin Doe
I found this book very entertaining. I read it while waiting in doctors offices or getting a haricut. Because the articles are short, it makes it easy to stop without losing track of what's happening. After reading the 1st book, I've ordered the next 2. I'll probably get them all eventually.
