This Is Venice (This Is...travel) Hardcover – February 22, 2005
Purchase options and add-ons
Like the other Sasek classics, This is Venice is a facsimile edition of his original book from the 1960s and is still timely and current in every way. The brilliant, vibrant illustrations have been meticulously preserved, remaining true to his vision more than 40 years later and, where applicable, facts have been updated for the twenty-first century, appearing on a "This is...Today" page at the back of the book. The stylish, charming illustrations, coupled with Sasek's witty, playful narrative, makes for a perfect souvenir that will delight both children and their parents, many of whom will remember this book from their childhood.
This is Venice, first published in 1961, presents indelible impressions of romantic, watery Venice, where under a brilliant blue sky Sasek the gondolier navigates the winding canals to visit such famous and glorious landmarks as the Palazzo Grassi, Piazza San Marco, Doges Palace, and the Accademia di Belle Arti.

About the author

Miroslav Šašek (November 16, 1916, Prague – May 1980, Wettingen, Switzerland) was a Czech emigre author and illustrator, best known for a series of books for children titled This Is..., which he signed M. Sasek.
Originally trained as an architect, he had just begun a career in children's literature when the Czechoslovak coup d'état of 1948 prompted him to emigrate to Munich, West Germany, where he worked for Radio Free Europe from 1951 to 1957. This Is Paris appeared in 1959, starting what ultimately grew into a series of eighteen books. Šašek's This Is London received the New York Times Choice of Best Illustrated Children's Book of the Year in 1959, as did This Is New York in 1960. This Is New York also received the Boy's Club of America Junior Books Award in 1961, while This Is the United Nations appeared on the International Board on Books for Young People Honor List in 1979. Šašek was living in Paris at the time of his death, which occurred on a trip to Switzerland.

The book is long, and is very fact filled; there is no storyline or characters you follow around. My child loved this but some children might find it a bit dry.
and as with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the city...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the city WAS as well as the present day differences.
i highly recommend this book if you are interested in either venice, or simply in wonderful illustration.
When I was telling our 4 year old grandson that there are no cars or streets in Venice but instead there are canals and boats, he responded, "you're kidding, grandma - right?" I brought out the Venice books I have made to show him the photos of his cousins walking alongside canals, riding on vaparettos and enjoying the treat of a gondola excursion through the back streets (canals).
The sense of wonder that is Venice is not felt in the Sasek book. Even the illustrations are dated and unsatisfying. For example, it's confusing for young children to view an illustration of Piazza San Marco filled with cars regardless of the explanation that this would never happen.
My feeling is that a completely new book needs to be written in the same style as the "This is....." series and the current "This is Venice" book should be shelved!

随分前にヴェニスに行きましたが、また、その時の光景が思い起こされました。
見終わった後は下駄箱の上に立てかけてインテリアとして飾ってます。
玄関が明るくなりオシャレです!!
On my trip, I made a endeavour to visit all the places and things in the book and made it part of my discovery of the city. Must buy if going to Venice!
