But there a whole essay in which Cassidy interview librarians who are studying ancient languages on tablets, and how they go about piecing together meanings and discerning hapax legomena (words that only appear once in a text) in collusion with other libraries. And that was so neat! And there were brief histories of libraries, from the Library of Alexandria to the library systems envisioned and established by Benjamin Franklin. There's an interview with a librarian who came up with an idea for checking out those American Girl dolls, and it's so sweet because each doll comes with a diary for the kids to write in, and it's like, how creative is that? That's the sort of engagement we need to cultivate for reluctant readers and writers; giving the kids a sense of connection with the doll and the other kids through the little diaries definitely positively reinforces writing and reading practice.
And there's a long, intriguing essay with multiple interviews about how libraries choose which collections to cultivate; what will people need to know in the future?
So, tl;dr, this book is so much better than I thought it was going to be, and I already thought it was going to be pretty good. I keep giving it out to my friends because it's so engaging while not feeling too dense.
this is an inspiring book.
in this day of information overload, librarians are our guides in navigating the vast sea of information available via many sources.
this is a great present for the librarians in your life.
