How to Separate Real Scientific Truths from Fake News

“Scientific literacy is our best defense in an age of increasing disinformation.” ―Kellie Gerardi, Aerospace Professional and Author of Not Necessarily Rocket Science

#1 New Release in Safety & First Aid, Education, Essays & Commentary, Scientific Research, and Ethics

We live in the internet age, where scams, frauds, fake-news, fake stories, fake science, and false narratives are everywhere. With the knowledge base gained from Dave Farina’s simple explanations, learn to spot misinformation and lies on the internet before they spot you.

Is This Wi-Fi Organic? is a playful investigation of popular opinions and consumer trends that permeate our society. The organic craze has taken hold of grocery culture despite most being unable to define the term. Healers and quantum mystics of every flavor are securing their foothold alongside science-based medicine, in an unregulated and largely unchallenged landscape of unsubstantiated claims. Anti-science mentality is growing. Misleading popular opinions are used to sell you products and services that range from ineffectual to downright dangerous.

Learn how to separate fact from fiction. Dave Farina, author and science communicator from the YouTube channel Professor Dave Explains offers easy-to-read lessons on basic scientific principles everyone should understand, and then uses them to expose threads of confusion among the public.

Learn:

  • The real science behind semi-controversial health issues like drugs and vaccines
  • What energy actually is, and how we use it each and every day
  • A core of scientific knowledge that empowers you to spot misinformation, fake-news, fake science, and increase your critical thinking skills

Readers captivated by the scientific and critical thinking teachings in science books like Brief Answers to the Big Questions by Stephen Hawking, The Demon-Haunted World, or Calling Bullshit, will love Is This Wi-Fi Organic?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"With undeniable charm and just the right amount of humor, Is This Wi Fi Organic? cuts through the chaos of both bombastic woo and pretentious scientific pomp to deliver a wonderfully rational discussion on some of the biggest misconceptions plaguing the publics’ view of the discipline that is science. This book is sure to keep you laughing while also keeping you thinking. The contents of these pages will help the reader understand the power of science to help both humanity and the planet thrive.” ―Matt Candeias, author of In Defense of Plants

"Dave Farina’s diverting exploration of snake-oil science is a must-have for any family gathering ― finally, you’ll have the perfect (+ accurate) repartee for debunking MLM homeopathy and clarifying that a “chemical free” label is a misnomer." ―Zara Stone, author of The Future of Science is Female

“Scientific literacy is our best defense in an age of increasing disinformation. Dave Farina offers readers helpful mental frameworks to ascertain what is fact, and a cloak of protection against tempting fiction.” ―Kellie Gerardi, Aerospace Professional and Author of Not Necessarily Rocket Science

I gave this book to my dad as a gift. The next time I saw him he wouldn’t stop talking about it, saying how great and smart it is and telling me all about things he learned from it. Was definitely a big hit!

With me reading it, the book was sort of preaching to the choir, but there were still little valuable nuggets I learned about Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. I feel his MA in science education has paid off because he communicates ideas in such a clear way that I would feel comfortable recommending this book to others who don't have a strong grasp of basic sciences. One concern I have is that although I absolutely love his sarcastic humor and it made the book more enjoyable to read, I worry that it could discourage believers of pseudoscience from reading further if they feel they are being insulted. Overall, the book had incredible vibrational energy quantumly speaking.

I discovered "Professor Dave Explains" YouTube channel about six months ago and have enjoyed watching his various series (everything from Astronomy to American History to Mycology to learning Italian!) He also debunks such things as flat earth, electric universe, etc. Those I don't enjoy so much as he colors his excellent academic approach to debunking with a bit too much sarcasm for my taste. In this book, he sticks to the mature approach and doesn't insult his readers as he does in *those* videos - instead urging intellectual rigor. "Learn the building blocks behind chemistry and the other sciences, and then you'll be able to recognize the scams for what they are" - to paraphrase his credo.

The information is all there, written in his distinctive style, the same style he uses in his academic videos.

My only complaint is the way that the information is laid out. I would have liked to have seen headers for each topic he talks about throughout the text, such as Alternative Medicine (with a subtopic of homeopathy, for example), the various subsections of Biotechnology that have many people so terrified, etc.) There is no index, so the reader can't go to a specific section to read up on something that particulary interests them.

The book is well-illustrated, but I found the grey boxes labeled TL:DR annoying. I had to look up what that meant - Too Long, Didn't Read. I was even more annoyed after learning the definition, because that tendency of people to not have the attention span necessary to read more than two sentences at a time is a worrisome one. I'm not sure if this was put in as an in-joke or what. The content of the grey boxes are actually just pull quotes, presumably used to break up the "wall of text." Headers and subheaders for each topic would have done the job better, IMHO, and conveyed more information to the reader.

But these are quibbles. The information is there. It's well written, if you like Professor Dave's personable style, so by all means give it a read. And read it with rigor. Take notes. I didn't see any contact info for the author in the back matter, but if you check out Professor Dave's YouTube channel you'll find ways to contact him. He welcomes questions. And of course, watch his videos.

I bought this book to find out if my new WiFi router is organic or not. But after reading the entire book I still didn't get the answer for that!! I think I'll have to buy the new router my friend is selling that's all natural, %100 organic, non GMO, and most of all, doesn't have the cancer causing 5G that's in all the mainstream companies put in.....
So, if you're looking for some "mainstream science facts" that'll teach you science truths then this is an amazing book, but if you're looking for advice on the most natural WiFi then this won't really help you. ...

This book cleared some misconceptions that i had about the scientific process, it was amazing for me to realize that so much garbage is presented as real science and millions of people just accept it without even investigating their claims, although i never believed in stuff like crystall healing and the universe has a conscience narrative, i always thought that anything synthetic and chemical equals bad. I feel very foolish for not spending any time investigating those things, if you want to be scientifically litterate this is the book to buy, even though English is my third language i didnt find it difficult to grasp main points of the book. Thanks professor Dave.

I bought the Kindle version. I have only read the first bit on Chemistry, but I have relearned a lot I forgot since High School and see how it applies to our world full of misinformation. I knew that detox products and the whole organic verses synthetic thing was crap, but now I know exactly why.
I am going to enjoy and learn from the rest of the book as well, I am sure.
I enjoy his YouTube content, including sarcasm, so I knew this was going to be a great read.
Great book, Professor Dave. Thanks!

I've read the sample, and... I couldn't stop the urge to buy it, so I did. The prolog is a bit too long, but the next stop is the basics, and it is written so well, this what I need. I am interested in molecular biology, but I am struggling sometimes because I jumped too high, so I need the basics. These are usually just not that interesting topics, but the way he explains it makes it fascinating. I will write a complete review as soon as I read the whole book. Thanks for the author!
