Hit or Miss Predictions That Mostly Miss

Only a few of these very brief essays will be of interest. Most of these essays lack imagination and do not really look too far into the future. What they portend isn't new; we see these things in most of the sci-fi on television and in the movies. Then, too, most of these writers have a vested interest in seeing their predictions coming true . . . because they've established their careers on these ideas and much of their fame and notoriety depends on them coming true. But, no, nano-tech will not change much (because of the limitations so far discovered at keeping molecules coherent at such diminished levels). Yes, climate change is going to be a problem. Quite a lot here is low-hanging fruit, the easy guess. These books by Brockman are fun, but they're also hit or miss--mostly miss. If you're over 50, have been reading a lot of science, seen a lot of movies, and are generally awake, much that is here won't come as a surprise.

It is always fun to get Brockman's changing everything. Here one gets observations, very short one, from experts about technology change and its influences. Each of these vignettes is suggestive without being extensive enough to find support for the author's opinions. My use of this book is to occasionally find individual 'experts' some of whom have reputations and others not. It is a book of observations about changes presented in a couple paragraphs and sometimes a couple pages. Serious observations but not useful detail.

This is not a normal book. It is a collection of responses to a question - in this case, "What will change everything" by many of the best thinkers of our time. The theme is the question; the answers vary from a short paragraph to a chapter by smart people talking to smart people across fields of specialty and interest. You will recognize many of the names but certainly not all, or at least I didn't. You will likely agree with some but not all.

Another little bonus here is that each response stands all by itself. You don't have to follow the long development of an argument; you can drop in on the discussion when convenient for you without a time commitment. I find it worked especially well as Kindle book on my Kindle and my phone.

I immediately bought another book of this series when I finished this one.

What the most brilliant people across many professions are thinking deeply about

When the future arrives I am often taken by surprise. This is a book that gives me a few hundred easily digestible glimpses into what some evidently brilliant thinkers are thinking about the possible future. About a third of the entries are not super-interesting to me (though they are the ones that may be to others) but the majority are pretty wonderful. It's like being seated next to someone like Steven Pinker at a dinner party, and turning to him and asking what he's working on that really excites him. The chapters are what you'd most likely hear in reply without getting into numbing detail and jargon -- how great is that? What an idea John Brockman had in editing these books.

If you wish a vision of the future through the brightest minds across the U.S. that cover the progress of nanotechnology, computational biology, advanced physics, and many other topics that are written for the lay reader, simply buy this book, and get a head start on how and when major new ideas will transform the Planet. Mr. Bockman is skilled at highlighting the most advanced ideas as seen through the eyes of new and old thinkers....it will make you think !

It is not easy to pinpoint exactly what has gone wrong in this book, but it seems that it has to do with too large of a question that has been explored to death in futuristic, sci-fi, popular science literature. A similar book with a more narrow question "what scientific concept would improve everybody's cognitive toolkit?" (This Will Make You Smarter: New Scientific Concepts to Improve Your Thinking) brought out more original, rarely-heard-before content.

It is not to say that the essays in the book are bad. Not at all. The problem is that almost all of them seem like nothing new. For example, here is a very perceptive and interesting idea by Nick Bostrom, but would you say you've never heard it before?

"We can increase humanity's joint problem-solving capacity by creating more people or by integrating a greater fraction of the world's existing population into productive endeavors, and we can develop better tools for communication and collaboration, various Internet applications being recent examples. Each of these ways of enhancing individual and collective human intelligence holds great promise. I think they ought to be vigorously pursued. Perhaps the smartest and wisest thing the human species could do would be to work on making itself smarter and wiser. In the longer run, however, biological human brains might cease to be the predominant nexus of Earthly intelligence. Machines will have several advantages, most obviously, faster processing speed: an artificial neuron can operate a million times faster than its biological counterpart. Machine intelligences may also have superior computational architectures and learning algorithms."

If you haven't, then definitely buy this book! It will be of much interest to you. If you have, then let's go on searching for new horizons

Compilation of many short essays from very smart people. Some essays more interesting and better written than others. Most of the essays are fairly easy to read and understand, some not. Will probably read again in a month or two to pick up on things missed or not completely understood the first time.

Very well edited and really interesting. The ideas of what might change everything range from the almost utopian to some futures that seem almost frightening (living to 1,000 years-old, living forever... those will be advancements available to whoever develops them or to the wealthiest, and, what about the not developed world?) to breakthroughs in our understanding of how the world works that are fascinating.
The book is thought-provoking, a mind-opener and a subject to talk about. I highly recommend it.
