Editorial Reviews

Chicago's Methadones got our attention with their last proper album, "Not Economically Viable", which came out on Thick Records in 2004. It was their breakthrough, and anyone who overlooked that LP missed out on the BEST pop punk record of 2004. We then hooked up to release a hilarious party album ("21st Century Power Pop Riot") that featured The Methadones with a number of guest vocalists covering Cheap Trick, Costello, and more. Now it's back to business, and the Ã"Dones have a new batch of originals that pick up where they left off with the great "Not Economically Viable". It's called "This Won't Hurt" and they recorded it at the famed Atlas Studios in Chi-Town. The same guys that brought you stuff from The Lawrence Arms and Alkaline Trio have captured The Methadones in all their glory and have them sounding better than ever. Fronted by the venerable Dan Vapid, they have yet another album full of undeniable hits and on top of all this, they have two tours booked in the near futureÉhide your beer and chicken wings!

THIS WON'T HURT is a good album, better than 99% of the stuff you hear on the radio or read about in Rolling Stone these days. But compared to the other 3 Methadones albums (21st CENTURY POWER POP RIOT not included, as it's a bunch of cover songs), THIS WON'T HURT is lacking. The songs are still Ramones-style punk pop and sound as good as ever, but they're just not memorable. Compare this album to their first, ILL AT EASE, and you'll see what I'm talking about. The songs on ILL AT EASE really stand out and lodge in your memory. Each successive Methadones album (CAREER OBJECTIVE, then NOT ECONOMICALLY VIABLE) loses some of the momentum, with THIS WON'T HURT being practically generic. A few of the songs deal with alcohol, and perhaps the drink is affecting Vapid, the group's songwriter and singer. Hopefully things will turn around soon.

Fantastic album, I love it. Turn up the Noise is why I purchased it, but the snarky Poor Little Rich Girl has great lyrics.
