Feverish, almost nasty, detail.

This tale feels like being a cell inside an unknown animal. We have as reference a man and this man is a mystery to himself, the few glimpses we get of his past are confuse (is him a sorcerer?, a killer of his family?) and meanwhile we travel a kind of biological process through weird creatures.
This is a short story but quite, but quite, dense. The attention of details is painful and as the creatures are new it demands a lot of the reader collaboration in imagination, at least my imagination.
The story is so bizarre that feels real. The nature of the end justify the exoticism of the described creatures and the strange journey of the character.

The World is Full of Monsters displays an even greater degree of Mr. Vandermeer’s staggering imagination than his mind-blowing Borne novel and novella. At times, the ideas in this science fiction tale are so abstract and strange that it’s pointless to try and figure out what’s going on. My advice is to just be open, and receive.

First of all, let us take a moment to admire that cover. Yeah? OK, so I connected really well with Borne and quickly established that Vandermeer seems to have a knack for the bizarre. This was no exception. If anything, it really takes the unnatural talent and showcases it. But with that being said, for such a short read, it requires a bit of effort. The writing is superfluous at times, drawing out more than I felt necessary. Yet tucked within still lies those hidden messages. The problem here, is finding the patience to reveal them. I feel that Vandermeer’s writing is left open to the readers own interpretations and will impact each in a very different manner.

THIS WORLD IS FULL OF MONSTERS by Jeff VanderMeer is a difficult story to describe...imagine Rip Van Winkle mixed with Ash from Evil Dead, and throw in some shrooms, and I think you might have some idea what to expect.

The imagery is mind-blowing, and, unfortunately, overwhelming. The storyline proved difficult to follow for me. Told in first person, from a character who didn't understand what was happening to him...I couldn't make sense of it either.

Too confusing to be enjoyed.

A weird, poetic, dream-like work, with the deft use of language and gentle touches of pathos and humor that fans have come to expect from VanderMeer. Themes and symbols from the Area X trilogy and Borne abound; in fact, this novella could be a narration from an alternative Area X. The writing here may be even better than in those books, if that's possible. You'll want to take your time reading and savor each paragraph.

This short story is SO weird and cryptic but I love those kinds of stories, so I enjoyed it.

If you want to read something you'll understand easily and won't hurt your brain to read, I don't recommend this for you. But if you want the literary equivalent of looking at one of those neural image/deep dream image generators, then you should definitely read this.

I loved this. So much going on that I felt I understood on a deep and strange level that's hard to articulate. Certainly open to interpretation and probably not gonna be for everyone. Still, wow. Trying to makes sense of a world as it changes in grotesque and incomprehensible ways right under your feet. I know that feeling.

Leider beschränkt sich der Plot auf das beschreiben der ungewöhnlichen Veränderungen, die der Ich-Erzähler erlebt. Interessant, aber mir etwas zu wenig. Für Freunde Vandermeers aber durchaus ein netter Appetithappen.
