Review

This is one of the most enjoyable cruising books I have read, one ofthose adventure stories you find it hard to put down for the fear ofmissing something in its continuity. I couldn't wait for the nextchapter.
Like Jackie's previous books, A Standard Journey, Of Foreign Build, and Cruisers' AA, This Is It is a beautifully written book, adelightful description of the return to ocean and cruising by Jackie and her husband Noel after they had settled down ashore at Greenwell pointon the New south Wales South Coast...  - Afloat Magazine, Australia

Here’s the thing: Jackie Parry tells you about a time in her unusual, adventurous, enviable life in such a humble way that you wish she were a friend of yours.

She artfully balances the description of her and her husband’s story of sailing a boat from California to Australia with a few observations and thoughts about life, and she does it in an unobtrusive, pleasant, conversational way. For example, on their way westward from California to Australia, they naturally (naturally, that is, IF you are Jackie and Noel) found themselves in the mountains of Peru hired to teach English to a group of salsa dancers. She notices the differences between the young adult students’ hands and hers, and she mentions how she is beginning to realize that she is no longer as young as she feels. It is just a glancing mention, but the image of the younger / older hands carries the weight of those first feelings of realization that many of your days have indeed flowed behind you like water under a bridge.

You can tell, too, when she’s remembering good, joyous times – the emotion swells up between her words . . .

Yes, yes, yes, if you have the spirit of someone who feels that his or her life is an adventure on whatever scale or level of success, yes, yes, yes, you will enjoy getting to know Jackie Parry.

Most of us dream about someday sailing on a blue ocean and exploring out of the way places and islands. That said, most of us carry-on 'nine to five' and let slip the oppertunities. As a Beta review reader, I was privileged to read the original manuscript, warts and all. I have to say I was enthralled from beginning to end which is no mean feat for an engineer! As such I found the content very informative and also technically interesting without being nerdy but it was the descriptive passages of far away places that really hit home. Jackie and Noel dare to be different and take the reader on a roller coaster ride of experiances and emotions throughout their action packed voyage. I actually started to regret the impending end and wanted it to last longer. Hats off to these intrepid adventurers which show us all an alternate way of living. Oh well back to work tomorrow or maybe I should search the net for an old yacht to do up! This book is certainly an inspiration to do so.

Jackie is a marvelous writer! I had read her other books and this one did not disappoint me, it was as good or better than the others. The bottom line is she is a very good story teller. You can see the story unfold in your mind as she narrates the story. I was pleased to be asked to beta read the book, lucky me. This is a "must read" if you like exciting stories and learning about living on a boat. This life would not be for me, so I love reading how other people live and what motivates them. EXCELLENT BOOK.

What a great story--life. I was given this book to beta read. I was given this book to Beta Read. This is a story about a couple that definitely has wanderlust and adventure in their bones. They both met when they were going thru a difficult period of their life and had an instant bond. After years at sea on their first boat they finally sold it and put down roots on dry land in California. They both went to nautical school and got their commercial boat license and they both taught nautical info for a few years (they must have saved every penny but didn’t tell us this). When the wanderlust hit hard again they began a boat search. They found their perfect boat but couldn’t agree on a price—just as they were going to take the search to Florida the owner called back and they finally negotiated a price and Pyewacket was their new home. Now all they had to do was check everything, replace many things and make sure she was seaworthy as their route would take them from California across the Pacific Ocean to Australia. Sound like fun? Well, they meet and make a lot of friends on the way when they stop at different islands—it is an expensive undertaking and most ports want money to anchor and stay there. Smooth sailing is a real joy but crossing the pacific you have to be a weatherman and they had some storms they rode out and nearly ended their voyage. One part of the book informs you of the comradery when another boater is taking on water. Several boats stayed near the limping boat and made sure it made it to port. Then there were the sharks—let’s go swimming—yeah right. Finally they made it to Australia in the middle of a horrible storm and they sold the boat easily—well, I don’t know what they are going to do know but I am waiting for the next book!!

I was lucky enough to be a Beta Reader for this new publication from the talented and awe-inspiring Jackie Parry. Like her other books "This Is It" doesn't disappoint, it is action packed with adventure on the high seas and at some of the world's most remotest islands, places which many of us can only dream about visiting yet alone contemplating getting to in our own boat. Jackie and her husband, Noel, learn a lot as they travel, about their new boat, the rules and regulations required to enter different countries, their amazing surroundings and the people who inhabit them, how to remain strong and focused in the face of storms and not least of all about themselves. This tale is much more than a book about wonderful places, it is about life and living. It made me laugh out loud, it also made me cry, had me perching on the edge of my seat as the elements relentlessly attempted to impede their journey and at the end, left me wanting more. "This Is It", shows us by pushing ourselves to the limit we can achieve great things and overcome all that life and the elements throws at us. Well done Jackie, a great read.
