This is a tense chase through familiar but very changed places, like the Utah desert and the city of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The main character, Cavatica, has grown greatly in the course of her adventures and she makes a surprising decision about a genetically modified super soldier who falls into their hands. This decision has repercussions that could save her soul or break her heart. The story is fast paced but the emotions run as deep as the cool oasis they discover in the Utah desert. Cavatica’s relationships with her father, her sisters, and the boy she loves, are tender and thoughtful and heartbreaking, set with contrast against the harshest of backdrops.
Oh, and if you love to see a bad group of people get taken down in the most satisfying of ways, settle in and enjoy the ride, because Cavatica Weller and her sisters deliver. I enjoyed this story very much, and can’t wait for the next in the series.
There are more twists and turns in this virtual roller coaster than I have ever experienced before. There are a few slow parts, however, Mr. Ritchey is only giving you a chance to catch your breath before the ride starts again. Strength and fortitudes are tested again and again. Emotions are manic with a small degree of resolution reached. I’m not sure if I can keep up with all this tension, it’s wearing me down.
The New Morality code beliefs that Cavatica values so highly have always struck me wrong. They are way too strict for women where society has more women than men. It puzzles me that most women remain submissive. Cavatica has outgrown the submissive behavior because of their circumstances. Even though she is the youngest of the Weller sisters she has been leading the mission to deliver the sterility cure to the rest of the world. God is playing a larger role in Cavatica’s life, she’s grasping for strength outside of herself.
While I thought the New Morality was one of the worst codes to live by, I was mistaken. When our small group of crusader’s are taken captive by a group of hunters, they are led to a heavily guarded mysterious city ruled by men. Holy crappola! Women are viewed as property to be fought over. The more women a man owns the more status he has in their society. Entertainment in town are the bloody fights staged by men wanting a larger harem to call their own. Then, as I am giving up all hope for the Weller sisters and Micaiah’s survival, Mr. Ritchey leaves us with a small spark of hope for their future.
FYI: “Thistle Inferno” is book three in THE JUNIPER WARS series. I believe it is best to read books one and two before starting “Thistle Inferno.” **Originally written for "BigAl’s Books and Pals" book blog. May have received a free review copy.** July 17, 2017
Format/Typo Issues: I was given an unproofed ARC, so I can’t really comment on the finished product.
Micah’s father created an army to find him and kill anyone with knowledge of his existence. Seems Micah is in possession of data that reveals a cure for the sterility that has plagued mankind for many decades. ARK would be doomed if the cure was ever released.
Along with the conflicted priest, Father Pilate, the group has captured and subdued Rachel Vixx. She is the last of the Vixx sisters, a group of genetically engineered super soldiers. This ragtag group sets off back into the Juniper in hopes of evading capture and returning home to Burlington. What they didn’t expect was to come across an entire city of men blocking their travels.
Ritchey’s third novel in The Juniper Wars series, Thistle Inferno, is an exciting thrill ride with the Weller sisters at the helm. This steampunk Western does an excellent job of mixing old world technology with desperation inspired ingenuity. Electronics do not work in the Juniper, but steam-power does.
I thought this would be the last book in the series as I was expecting it to be a trilogy like so many authors are prone to. Thankfully, the story will continue. Hopefully, we will get to see if Rachel will stay loyal to the Wellers.
5 out of 5 stars.
I received this book for free from the author for review consideration. This in no way affected my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
